Many changes from the later 1808/1811 issue - the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are drawn very preliminarily and inaccurately, very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map. Outline color by state. In two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and backed with linen. Folds into original tan marbled slip case 32x19 with a paste down label reading "North America. Date 1796" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen 32 Dame Strt." printed in black ink. |

Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. Uncolored. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 30 sections. Folds into half leather marbled paper covered boards 17x12. |

This map was originally published by David William Smyth in 1800 and went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154 and Winearls listing). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). There is an ad for "Colton's...Complete Series of War Maps" on the verso of the cover and a pasted down list of Union and Confederate Political and Military leaders on the verso of the map. The map was sold in London by Sampson Low, Son & Co., by arrangement with Colton. All the prices quoted for Colton's maps on the paste down are in pounds. There was great demand in England for maps of the American Civil War, and Colton exploited it by providing his maps to English map sellers. W.H. has an identical copy of this map sold by Crutchly. Stanford also sold this map under his imprint. Full color. Dissected into 32 sections. Above the title is an explanation of the "American System of Weather Signals." The Chicago map shows the Burnt District in red. Lots of useful text spread around, in the classic Watson manner. |

Population tables, statistics, etc. Highly detailed map showing railroads and counties and cities in the eastern part of the U.S. and Canada. Has "United States" on the cover and is the companion map to the Map of the Western States... with "Territories" (see #2539.000) on its cover. Copyright date is 1871. For some reason, Modelski does not list all these early Watson maps, but only a few maps dated 1874 and later, perhaps Watson did not deposit all his maps with the LOC. |

Large hand colored and very detailed map of the United States and part of Canada. Up to date in the west, showing an extraordinary number of towns in California and Nevada. Topography is clearly delineated and Railroads are shown are far as they had been developed. Even Colorado is shown as a State (which occurred in 1876). Inset map of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. There is a quote from Stansbury regarding the desert outside of Salt Lake City (a bit out of date, but shows attention to detail). The map makers certainly used the most current U.S. government maps as sources. On the verso is the label of Lanee, successor of Longuet, a Paris map seller, with Etats Unis in pen. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and edged and backed with linen. Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 25x17 with "United States Stanford 1875" stamped in gilt on the spine. |
