With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy). |

2nd edition, 1st 1847 issue, without the lower "Road Between Mexico & Vera Cruz" inset but with an upper right inset of "The late Battlefield" (Monterey). The 1st edition was 1846, also without the lower inset (Streeter 3868). The 2nd edition is this copy, almost the same as the 1846 issue (some towns added in Northern Mexico), but dated 1847 (not in Streeter or Wheat). The 3rd edition is dated 1847 and adds the lower inset map mentioned above (Streeter 3869, Wheat Gold 35). A much simpler map than the Map of Texas, Oregon and California of 1846, with no engraver credit. Full color, with Texas outlined in red, folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Mexico" in gilt. |

It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. This map says entered in 1850, but we can find no record of an 1850 issue, only an 1851. However, the atlas map in the 1852 Universal Atlas follows this larger 1852 map (it is taken from the same plate) and it was in 1850 that Thomas Cowperthwait took over the atlas publication from Mitchell, and probably this map as well. So there may be an 1850 issue. Not seen by Wheat - Wheat 726 is the 1851 issue of this map as it appears as an inset (with an inset within it of the Gold Regions) in Mitchell's 1851 Reference and Distance Map of the U.S. (W.H. has a separate Pocket Map issue of this 1851 map without the Gold Region inset, the 1852 issue has towns added in the Gold Region that do not appear on the 1851 edition). The map still has the original table of "Emigrant Route from Missouri to Oregon" with distances. During restoration, when the linen was removed from the back of this map, we discovered the 1846 first edition printed on the verso. Apparently the printer reused some of the 1846 edition unbacked wall maps as stock for the 1852 wall map edition. The linen backing conveniently hid the old map. |

This is Meyer's grandest production, a real tour de force that has fifty maps of the Americas including thirty three maps that are derived from the Tanner/Mitchell Universal atlas maps of the various U.S. States and Territories, Canada, and South America and are dated from 1844 to 1854 (with most dated 1844 or 1845). Many of the maps in this atlas have Philadelphia as a place of publication (along with several other cities) indicating that there may have been an arrangement with Tanner and/or Mitchell to copy the maps. The U.S. maps dated 1844-46 all appear to derive from a late 1830s edition of Tanner's Universal atlas. Those dated from 1850-54 derive from the Mitchell and Thomas Cowperthwait issues of the Universal atlas from 1850-54. Espenhorst lists a separate atlas (3.3.3) published in 1860 with these U.S. maps only, titled "Grosse und vollstandiger Auswanderungs-Atlas fur Nordamerika." The Iowa, Wisconsin, and Texas maps are not copied from the Universal atlas, but all the others are almost exact copies and it is strange that no credit is given to Tanner or Mitchell. Notwithstanding that, the copies are beautifully done and in some cases (the California map adds an inset of San Francisco Bay not on the Mitchell version) superior to the American originals. Wheat misses the Tanner/Mitchell derivation in the two maps he cites. The other maps in the atlas are all superbly engraved and the city maps have exquisite views -- all combining to make this the finest German atlas of the mid 19th century. Full and outline hand coloring. Maps are bound in half leather marbled boards with "Meyer's Grosser Hand-Atlas aller Theile der Erde." stamped on the spine in gilt. Scarce. |
