Considered to be the best book on California prior to the American occupation. Wheat calls the large map "a landmark...It made these western regions known in European official circles...his highly original map has much to commend it." Wheat neglects to mention the similarities between this map and the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America, 1837 edition. While not a copy of the Arrowsmith, it clearly followed the Arrowsmith map in most areas. The atlas volume contains, in addition to the large map, plans of ports from Acapulco to the Aleutians, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and the mouth of the Columbia. The chart of San Francisco Bay is based on Beechey's chart of 1833, improved by de Mofras' own explorations, particularly in the north bay. This copy belonged to the Prince of Coburg, with a presentation inscription from the author. The large map is hand painted in outline color, all others are without color. Covers of the volumes are half leather dark green cloth covered boards with a crown embossed on the front in gilt. The title "De Mofras. Mexique. Californie. Oregon. 1" is stamped in gilt on the spine of volume one, "... 2" on volume two, and "...Atlas" on the atlas. Rare. |

Full color map with no publisher name, and date, Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846, see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line, Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Map is full color, folded into red cloth covers 15x10 with "Mexico." stamped in gold. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Prime meridian: Washington. |

Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Map printed without color. Includes view of Pyramid Lake, Upper California, and table of distances. This map was issued with Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" (the book is not present). A later issue of this map appeared in Colton's pocket map titled "Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico & c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" (see our #170). This first issue is distinguished from the second issue by the following differences: On the main map, the second issue has "Printed at Ackerman's rooms 120 Fulton St. N.Y." under the "Entered...." line below the title, the table of distances on the second issue adds "New Orleans to Havana" and "New Orleans (actually the ditto sign ) to Vera Cruz" and drops those miles on the lines in the Gulf of Mexico linking those ports, on the inset map of the Gold Region, the second issue has "Quicksilver Mines" below San Jose instead of "Quicksilver" and the second lists three southern rivers not listed in the first - Stanislaus, Towalumnes, and Acumnes, and finally, in the second issue the decorative border of vines is changed in ways too subtle to list here. None of the prior authorities have noted these differences between the two states. Colton also published a version of this first issue on heavier paper, unfolded with wide margins, and without the lines or distances on them linking the ports of New Orleans, Vera Cruz and Havana, in the Gulf of Mexico, this may be the earliest issue.
