The large map of the west is one of the most interesting and beautiful government maps of the 1840's. It filled in many of the gaps in cartographic knowledge of the west. Note	The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line, Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Map is full color, folded into red cloth covers 15x10 with "Mexico." stamped in gold. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Prime meridian: Washington.

Note	Large uncolored map of the world published separately to accompany the "Memorial of James B. Moore and Company, asking the aid of the Government in the establishment of a regular Line of Mail Steamers from California to China and the East Indies" published in 1849, listed by Sabin without a map. The map shows over thirty routes by steamer from Europe and the United States to the far east, emphasizing the advantage of routes to Asia from the west coast of the U.S. connected to the east coast and Europe via the (yet to come) transcontinental railroad. There is a large attractive vignette of a steamer, two tables listing distances from various ports, and an excellent inset map of the "Harbour of San Francisco California." This map is similar to, but more detailed than, the Burr/Haven map of "The World on Mercator's Projection..." of 1850. Not found in any references (other than the Sabin listing of the Memorial without map) and presumably rare. Prime meridian is Greenwich.

Note	This was the best general map of the American West published by the Topographical Engineers until the Emory and Warren maps of 1857. Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. Map is without color.

Note	See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. Strangely, that map is not found in any references. Without color. Includes view: Pyramid Lake, Upper California (i.e., Nevada)

Note	First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover.

Note	Wheat calls this "rare but otherwise unimportant," due to some misspellings and inaccuracies in the map. Streeter sale illustrates the map and the price realized was the same as the Eddy map of 1853. I find the Wheat inaccuracies minor, with most of them being misspellings. The overall map is impressive. It would be interesting to find the map or maps that were used as sources. Ouline color by state. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 16.5x11 with "Map Of California And Adjacent Country By F. Goodwin" stamped in gilt.

Note	The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Bound in dark green leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt. The two insets in the first map are titled "Gold Region Of California" and "District Of Columbia". Both maps in outline color. Prime meridians are in Washington D.C. and Greenwich.
