Note	With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy).

Note	Full color map with no publisher name, and date, Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846, see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Note	A rare guide and map (actually two maps on one sheet) that is a "cousin" of Mitchell's "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with The Regions Adjoining" also issued in 1846. Although Howes lists this under Mitchell, Mitchell's name is not on any part of the guide or map, Streeter lists it under Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., the publisher. There are 62 pages of text and several woodcut illustrations. The two full color maps are titled "Map of That Part of the West Coast of North America Comprising Oregon and Upper California" (26x20) and "Map of the State of Texas With Portions of the Adjoining Regions" (26x20) both printed on one sheet. These maps are earlier states of similar maps with slightly different titles that appear in Mitchell's School Atlas of 1846, maps #13 and #15. The School Atlas was published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. and the maps in it were copyrighted by Mitchell (this may be the reason Howes lists this "Geographical Description..." under Mitchell). The stamped leather covers 13.5x8 to both of these guides are the same with the exception that they are red in this copy. So I presume that Thomas, Cowperthwait issued this to compete with Mitchell's guide, yet somehow had Mitchell's cooperation in using the maps and the covers (assuming that Mitchell had some control over these). The two maps are impressive taken together and although smaller than Mitchell's "New Map of Texas, Oregon and California" they are very elegant. This guide is much rarer that Mitchell's guide and sold for two and one half times more at the Streeter sale.

The 1st edition was 1846, also without the lower inset (Streeter 3868). The 2nd edition is this copy, almost the same as the 1846 issue (some towns added in Northern Mexico), but dated 1847 (not in Streeter or Wheat). The 3rd edition is dated 1847 and adds the lower inset map mentioned above (Streeter 3869, Wheat Gold 35). A much simpler map than the Map of Texas, Oregon and California of 1846, with no engraver credit. Note	Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). Note	Third edition, first being 1846 (according to Ristow, although Karrow only lists an 1847). Texas is still in large configuration with a panhandle running up to Oregon. California and the Great Basin are shown only as Upper or New California. Fremont's 1843 and 1845 maps are incorporated, but not the 1848 map. The title is in the lower left, with an inset map of the West Indies and an inset of Newfoundland. In the 1850 edition the title is moved to the upper right. In the 1853 edition it is moved to the upper left. Map is dissected into 16 sections and edged in pink silk. Full color by state. Folds into green and pink plaid end sheets and half leather marbled covers 38x35 with ties and a label reading "United States" in elegant manuscript.

Note	With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Note	Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. This map says entered in 1850, but we can find no record of an 1850 issue, only an 1851. Note	This appears on the verso of the 1852 edition of the same map. Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. Note	First edition. The cartography is elegant and understated. The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin."
