| Full Title |
Map Of Mexico & California. Compiled from the latest authorities. By Juls. Hutawa. Lithr. Second St. 45 St. Louis, Mo. 2nd Edition. 1863. (inset) Vicinity of Mexico. |
| List No |

| Note |
Reissue of 1848 2nd edition. Wheat says that only one copy of the map without the "2nd edition" added exists, he doesn't say where, also he says that only one copy exists, at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, with 2nd edition and no date after it (the true 2nd edition of 1848). Wheat's copy is like this one, as is the Huntington Library copy. There are no changes other than colored boundaries and the addition of New Mexico in type, between this and the 1848 edition. Map is folded into yellow card board covers 14x9 printed with "Hutawa's Traveling Map Of Mexico, And California." |

Los Angeles & San Bernardino topography. Wm. H. Hall, State Engineer, Sacramento. (circa 1880) |

3451.000 |
| Note |
Beautiful hand drawn map of the Los Angles-San Bernardino Basin. Pen-and-ink and pencil. Relief shown by hachures. It appears to be a base map on a scale of two miles to an inch, probably preliminary (several of Hall's notations on the edges indicate corrections needed to the topography) and earlier than the 1888 Report titled "Irrigation in California" that had 15 maps that may have been derived from this map. It may also have served as the base for "Drainage area map to accompany report on irrigation and water supply in California" by Wm. Ham. Hall, State Engineer. (188-?). Hall was a famous engineer who was the first state engineer and was responsible for many of the early state water projects (see California Water Atlas). This map does not have any names drawn in except for a few towns, rivers, or railroads lightly penciled in. All the land divisions and city plats are indicated, with mountains, rivers, railroads, roads, arroyos and shorelines shown. Hall also published four maps of the San Joaquin Valley in 1886 (see WH's copy) separately (see Calfornia Water Atlas p.26). "VI." Title and cartographer from verso. "14" on verso. |

This edition is not in Vogdes (he lists editions of 1869, 1876, and 1888). The copyright date is 1876, so it is probably similar to that edition. There are many changes, as one would hope (or expect) between this and the 1869 edition, both in graphic composition and topography. The map has been completely reengraved by S.B.Linton (the original engraver) and shows much of the General Land Office surveys. It is so full of detail as to be difficult to read in many areas. Two views are added: the Capital-Nevada, and University-California. The 1888 edition is reengraved completely yet again (WH's copy). This copy belonged to Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. The inside of the case flap closure reads "Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad - Office: Safe Deposit Building Room 8 - San Francisco, Cal." in calligraphic manuscript. The map is slightly trimmed at the bottom (affecting only the decorative border) in order to fit into his custom brown cloth case 28x17. Map has outline color, is in two sheets (Northern and Southern halves), each undissected and mounted on linen. |

A very attractive and detailed map of the state, probably produced by lithography, which is unusual for Rand McNally, because they normally used wax engraving for their maps. The coloring is also by hand, again not the norm for this firm. Rand McNally did a large scale map of California and Nevada (see our 1888 copy) which was wax engraved. Some uncredited, skillful cartographer produced this map of Montana for Rand McNally. Covers are dark brown cloth 17.5x11 with "Rand, McNally & Co's New Indexed Large Scale County And Township Map Of Montana." embossed in gold. prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. Rainfall Distribution Map to Accompany Report on Irrigation and Water Supply in California. Wm. Ham. Hall, State Engineer. On this Map the areas in the State, over which the average annual precipitation ranges between 5 and 10, 10 and 20, 20 and 30, 30 and 40, 40 and 50, 50 and 60, 60 and 70, and 70 and 80 inches, respectively, are approximately outlined and distinctively shaded. And the average rainfall at the several stations of observation is figured for each. |

5834.000 |
| Note |
Date estimated from data. Includes table of 220 California precipitation stations, listing the period of record (typically about 15 years) and the mean annual rainfall (precipitation). Hall's note indicates that later data and his one erratum, would lead to a few changes in the map. His note also indicates that the southern Sierra is wetter than his map shows - a correct conclusion. Comparison with the 1979 California Water Atlas map entitled, Mean Annual Precipitation, List No. 5788.008 in the David Rumsey Collection, shows that the pattern of precipitation shown by Hall is correct, however, some of the long-term (based on approximately a 100-year period of record) high-end values should be somewhat greater than Hall shows. Noteworthy differences are that the northwest coastal areas and central coast area of the Santa Lucia Mountains are considerably wetter than Hall indicates. In summary, a remarkably accurate map. Small hole in paper, near Red Bluff. Map scanned from the collection of the Water Resources Center Archives, University of California Library, call number mG409162 B1. In color. Mounted on linen. |

A big, wonderful, large scale map of the American west from central Colorado to the coast. Shows all railroads in operation, topographical features and public surveys. It is copyrighted in 1901 with the present title (indicating that it may be the first edition in this form) and in 1893 and 1898 as "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Standard Map of the United States" (suggesting that it may have been derived from a larger map of the entire U.S.). A pocket map version was also made of different parts of this map - see our 1888 Standard Map of California and Nevada, with the scale slightly enlarged. Outline color by state. Dissected into 42 sections. Folds into a new black cloth folding case 29x23 with "Pacific Coast States Rand McNally 1901" stamped in gilt along the spine. |
