This map is among the most detailed and largest scale maps of Yosemite issued during this part of the 19th century, rivaled only by the Wheeler Survey map of Yosemite published in 1883. This is a second issue of this map, here mounted as a wall map. This is the same as the first issue that appeared with the Yosemite Guide Book (see our #4212) except that it adds "Hite's Cove" on the Merced River just slightly west of its junction with Devil's Gulch. In the (1870) third issue (our #4650) Hite's Cove is relocated to a point just south of the Merced on the road titled "Road to Hite's Cove" and the erasure of the prior label is apparent. We have dated this second issue (1869) as a best guess. With black top and bottom rollers, and pink linen edging. Map is without color. |

Townsend's second collapsible globe with an internal mechanism for holding it open. The first collapsible Townsend globe was held open by an external stand - apparently no examples exist. Townsend was a school teacher in Vermont and later in California. His interest in globes was to produce a cheap globe that could be owned and used by students instead of a flat "map which, without explanation, is a false illustration, and can be understood only by a process of reasoning entirely beyond the mind of the child" (from Townsend's "Folding Globe Lessons"). This copy is presumed to be the second issue of this globe - an earlier issue has a somewhat different folder with only Townsend listed as publisher. However, it is not certain that both examples were not produced simultaneously in different cities. Both Globes are dated the same. Originally from the Welsh Collection. With a photocopy of Townsend's Folding-Globe Lessons, and an original advertising flyer for the globe. |

The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. The "unexplored" area in the Northeastern corner of California has been removed with much topographical detail changed from the first state. Eureka County is added in Nevada. The change of the Land Districts from eleven to fourteen includes a radical change in boundaries, some names changed, and numbering changed, indicating a major restructuring of the General Land Office administration in 1873. First edition, second state. Shows mineral deposits by color. Lineal descendent of the 1869 larger map of California and Nevada by Holt, Gibbes, and others. Also shows 10, 20 and 30 mile railroad grants. This is not the first state of the first edition - that has 11 land districts instead of the 14 found on this copy (see our #5154). The "unexplored" area in the Northeastern corner of California has been removed with much topographical detail changed from the first state. Eureka County is added in Nevada. The change of the Land Districts from eleven to fourteen includes a radical change in boundaries, some names changed, and numbering changed, indicating a major restructuring of the General Land Office administration in 1873. Map is folded into red cloth covers 16x10 with "Holt's Map Of California And Nevada." in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich. |

This edition is not in Vogdes (he lists editions of 1869, 1876, and 1888). The copyright date is 1876, so it is probably similar to that edition. There are many changes, as one would hope (or expect) between this and the 1869 edition, both in graphic composition and topography. The map has been completely reengraved by S.B.Linton (the original engraver) and shows much of the General Land Office surveys. It is so full of detail as to be difficult to read in many areas. Two views are added: the Capital-Nevada, and University-California. The 1888 edition is reengraved completely yet again (WH's copy). This copy belonged to Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. The inside of the case flap closure reads "Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad - Office: Safe Deposit Building Room 8 - San Francisco, Cal." in calligraphic manuscript. The map is slightly trimmed at the bottom (affecting only the decorative border) in order to fit into his custom brown cloth case 28x17. Map has outline color, is in two sheets (Northern and Southern halves), each undissected and mounted on linen. |
