Third edition, first being 1846 (according to Ristow, although Karrow only lists an 1847). Texas is still in large configuration with a panhandle running up to Oregon. California and the Great Basin are shown only as Upper or New California. Fremont's 1843 and 1845 maps are incorporated, but not the 1848 map. The title is in the lower left, with an inset map of the West Indies and an inset of Newfoundland. In the 1850 edition the title is moved to the upper right. In the 1853 edition it is moved to the upper left. Map is dissected into 16 sections and edged in pink silk. Full color by state. Folds into green and pink plaid end sheets and half leather marbled covers 38x35 with ties and a label reading "United States" in elegant manuscript. |

(with) two inset maps: Map of the Nicaragaua Route and A Map of the Proposed Rail Road from St. Louis To The Bay Of St. Francisco, Compiled from the Maps and Reports of Col. Fremont, by W.L. | Note |
Appears to be a reissue of earlier Burr map. This map was probably published by Burr c1842 (Wilkes' track prominently displayed, Oregon boundary not settled in original map) and then used by Haven, with added insets of the RR route, and by cutting the map down the middle of Asia to put North America in the center (see dateline joint). California is colored yellow (no mention of gold other than this hint) and the Gila River boundary is drawn in red (on his copy Wheat says that California is shown as part of Mexico). See the James B. Moore map of 1850 for a similar promotion of the U.S. as the new "center" of the Europe/Asia trade, using the proposed transcontinental railroad as the link. In outline color. Includes text, explanatory keys and table of distances. |

By Cyrus Lancaster, Albany, N.Y. |
| List No |

| Note |
Wilson began making thirteen inch globes in 1821 (see Yonge p.69) and in 1835 Cyrus Lancaster (having assumed leadership of the firm after the death of Wilson's two sons in 1833) brought out a new edition of the thirteen inch globe with the American eagle in the cartouche (Dekker/van der Krogt p. 132). This 1850 edition of the terrestrial globe is not recorded in any of the listings - only an 1850 celestial globe is listed by Kimball. Therefore it is the latest known example of Wilson's terrestrial globe. The plates are clearly tired, the image of the cartouche is weak and some of the mountain ranges are barely visible. But there is much new engraving in North America, showing the new divisions in the west - California, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico, and the new cities - Mormon City, Sacramento, Stockton, Albuquerque, etc. It has been suggested that this is the first showing of Mormon City on a globe. With a four legged table stand and horizon ring, total height from base to top is 18 inches. |

Large uncolored map of the world published separately to accompany the "Memorial of James B. Moore and Company, asking the aid of the Government in the establishment of a regular Line of Mail Steamers from California to China and the East Indies" published in 1849, listed by Sabin without a map. The map shows over thirty routes by steamer from Europe and the United States to the far east, emphasizing the advantage of routes to Asia from the west coast of the U.S. connected to the east coast and Europe via the (yet to come) transcontinental railroad. There is a large attractive vignette of a steamer, two tables listing distances from various ports, and an excellent inset map of the "Harbour of San Francisco California." This map is similar to, but more detailed than, the Burr/Haven map of "The World on Mercator's Projection..." of 1850. Not found in any references (other than the Sabin listing of the Memorial without map) and presumably rare. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

Unlike 1849 ed., this shows California gold region named and shown in yellow. It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. Shows Indian tribes and includes descriptive notes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington. |

This was the best general map of the American West published by the Topographical Engineers until the Emory and Warren maps of 1857. Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. Map is without color. |

This is one of the most attractive of the California Gold Rush period maps. Here it is published in pocket map form, with the 16 page "Appendix to Jackson's Map..." which describes the important mining centers. More ornate and detailed than Jackson's map of 1850, this is the only map to label Santa Cruz county "Branciforte." Shows for the first time, some of the mining activity in the south, which Jackson was involved with as an engineer. Map is full color by county, folded into dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "Jackson's Map Of The Mining Districts Of California" stamped in gilt. |

Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. This map says entered in 1850, but we can find no record of an 1850 issue, only an 1851. However, the atlas map in the 1852 Universal Atlas follows this larger 1852 map (it is taken from the same plate) and it was in 1850 that Thomas Cowperthwait took over the atlas publication from Mitchell, and probably this map as well. So there may be an 1850 issue. Not seen by Wheat - Wheat 726 is the 1851 issue of this map as it appears as an inset (with an inset within it of the Gold Regions) in Mitchell's 1851 Reference and Distance Map of the U.S. (W.H. has a separate Pocket Map issue of this 1851 map without the Gold Region inset, the 1852 issue has towns added in the Gold Region that do not appear on the 1851 edition). The map still has the original table of "Emigrant Route from Missouri to Oregon" with distances. During restoration, when the linen was removed from the back of this map, we discovered the 1846 first edition printed on the verso. Apparently the printer reused some of the 1846 edition unbacked wall maps as stock for the 1852 wall map edition. The linen backing conveniently hid the old map. |
