Note The third edition (although I can detect no changes from the first issue of 1830). Has the note in the lower left explaining the origin of the term of Fredonia. This map is the only one I have seen that copies almost literally three earlier maps: Lewis and Clark (1814), Long (1822), and Arrowsmith's Mexico (1820). Laurie used the term Fredonia, we may assume, to create a novelty of his map, in the same manner as his "Cabotia" map of 1814. Has the original case with label, and an advertisement for Crunchley's publications on the verso of the map. W. Heckrotte has another edition dated 1834 improved to 1836 (with changes in California based on John Arrowsmith's Map of British North America, 1834), and the second edition of 1832. The western topography is changed to incorporate Arrowsmith's map of 1834 (British North America) and an independent Texas is shown. Editions seen of 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1849. It appears that the map was updated frequently in order to keep it current. It is an excellent and beautiful map.

Note With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy).

Note With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label.

Note Late edition, 1st edition 1830. Lacks the note in the lower left corner regarding the origin of the term Fredonia, such note appears in the earlier editions. However, the western geography of this edition is most interesting, as it incorporates Fremont's discoveries. It does not have indications of gold discoveries. Graphically, a very beautiful map. See Spafford's Geography 1809 for further discussion of Fredonia. Cruchley published the 1830, 1832, and 1833 editions (as did Laurie, according to Wheat 393).

Philadelphia 1849 Published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Entered ... 1848, by Thomas, Cowperthwait, & Co. ... Pennsylvania. (with 5 inset maps).
List No 2766.001
Note This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text.

Note This is taken from Tanner's Map of the United States of Mexico, with the addition of the California Gold Regions colored in yellow, and an added inset map of "United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Routes from N. York to St. Francisco by Land & Water." The map has been updated to show Fremont's route across the Great Basin and the "Boundary of 1848" with Mexico. The 14x9 cover entitled "Tanner's Travelling Map of California & c has on the inside front a "Table of Routes from New-York to California, with the Modes of Conveyance, Distances, Time and Fares." This is a very late map for Tanner, still printed from engraved plates (although the impression looks a bit tired), in the next to last year of his publishing career. He died in Brooklyn in 1858.

Note This is the thin paper copy with smaller ornamental border and no publisher credit. Wheat believes it was folded into some copies of Farnham's "Life, Adventures, and Travels in California;" our copies of that book have the Haven map pasted in one (see our #3963) and this map pasted in the other (see our #5001). This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce.

List No 5057.000
Note This is earlier than our 1849 Map of the United States (see #264) which uses the same base map. Here, San Francisco is named Yerba Buena (which name appeared only briefly on maps published in 1848-1849), the Gold Region has far fewer towns (no Sacramento City, Sutters City or Fremont), and the Humboldt River is not yet drawn in the Great Basin. The copyright date is still 1847. Wall map surrounded by drawings showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the landing of the pilgrims and numerous battles. A small inset map of Mexico and a chart showing the population of the United States are included. The map is in color by state or region. The gold region of California is shown in gold. Mounted on black rollers and backed with linen.

Note This is Thomas Streeter's copy of this important map, identified as such by the inclusion of his handwriting on the inside cover, and the words "Louis Billon 1849" in ink on the inside front cover and verso of map. The border includes twelve views. As noted in Streeter, "This later issue of lot 3873 differs in the binding and in showing not only the 'Gold Region' near New Helvetia, but also 'El Dorado or Gold Region' along the Feather River. It also has quite an extensive 'Table of Distances' added at the right of the inset." This is the second 1849 edition, which was also produced as a wall map (see our #4312). In this edition Fremont's route is shown along the Humboldt River, and California has been extensively remapped. Map is in full color and folds into the original blind-stamped covers, 16x11, with the title "Colton's Map of the United States Mexico &c." in gilt on the front cover.

List No 4440.000
Note Large uncolored map of the world published separately to accompany the "Memorial of James B. Moore and Company, asking the aid of the Government in the establishment of a regular Line of Mail Steamers from California to China and the East Indies" published in 1849, listed by Sabin without a map. The map shows over thirty routes by steamer from Europe and the United States to the far east, emphasizing the advantage of routes to Asia from the west coast of the U.S. connected to the east coast and Europe via the (yet to come) transcontinental railroad. There is a large attractive vignette of a steamer, two tables listing distances from various ports, and an excellent inset map of the "Harbour of San Francisco California." This map is similar to, but more detailed than, the Burr/Haven map of "The World on Mercator's Projection..." of 1850. Not found in any references (other than the Sabin listing of the Memorial without map) and presumably rare. Prime meridian is Greenwich.

Note Unlike 1849 ed., this shows California gold region named and shown in yellow. It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. List No 2365.001
Note Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black.

Note Letter sheet map showing the "Lately planket (sic) Streets" and the original shoreline. Streeter estimates the date by comparison with the Butler and Zakreski maps, which are earlier and later, respectively. With a vignette of an untitled building in the lower right corner. This copy was owned by the noted San Francisco collector Dr. Alexander Thomas Leonard, with his signature and notes on the verso of the board the map is mounted on. According to Sally Woodbridge the firm of of Page, Bacon & Co., which owned the building in the lower right corner was at the top of the banking heap in 1852, it was est. in 1849 as a branch of a St. Louis bank. In the financial panic of 1855 it suffered a disastrous run and was ruined along with many other banks.

Note See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. Strangely, that map is not found in any references. Without color. Includes view: Pyramid Lake, Upper California (i.e., Nevada)

List No 5183.000
Note This is a composite wall map incorporating the famous 1849 Ord Survey (Robinson's first Los Angeles map) and the Hancock and Hansen survey maps of 1853 and 1859. This is the first appearance of the manuscript Ord Survey as a printed map and is therefore of considerable importance. Bancroft and Thayer were real estate brokers active in the 1870's, Robinson dates the map as circa 1875 (the map is undated) based on their activities and the fact that the map "was a popular wall decoration for real estates offices in the 1870's and '80's." The Ord Survey is in the middle of the map with the Hancock and Hansen surveys surrounding it. The Ord Survey shows the original pueblo buildings, the farms around them, a small group of lots, water courses and hills. In contrast, the later Hancock and Hansen Surveys divide the lands outside the original town center into much larger rectangular lots of equal size, imposing a grid pattern on the earlier meandering lots that is both visually striking and a portent of the phenomenal growth of settlement to come. Separately, we acquired the covers for the pocket map version (without the pocket map) in which someone wrote in a contemporary hand "This cover contained the copy of the 1st map of the City of Los Angeles made in 1849 by Lt. Ord and is now framed and hanging in my office. I paid $5.00 for it." Covers are dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Published By Bancroft & Thayer, Real Estate Brokers, 21 Spring Street, And W.H.J. Brooks, Searcher of Records, Los Angeles, Cal." stamped in gilt.

Note 1st Edition, 1st issue. Most of the maps come from Colton's 1859 edition of the General Atlas, published by Johnson and Browning, indicating the Johnson connection, some do not come from this atlas, and their sources are: the New England maps (scale 1" = 9 miles) come from Colton's map of New England and then the sub-maps of Vermont and New Hampshire, Mass/Conn/R.I., the Ohio/Indiana is still a mystery, all the 1" = 24 miles maps (Iowa, Kentucky, etc.) come from Colton's Map of the United States and the Canadas, originally published by J. Calvin Smith in 1843 (see W. Heckrotte's copies and his list of editions), and the Colton General Atlas maps used by Johnson come from Colton's Travellers Series of maps - see our copies of Penn., Indiana. Colton mentions "The National Atlas of the United States, constructed from the Public Surveys..large Folio" as in preparation in his 1855 catalogue, this may be the embryonic Johnson Atlas. Colton used his wall maps "cut up" for pocket maps and Atlases. Johnson's maps of S. America, Europe, Africa, and (in the first edition, first issue, only) China, East Indies etc., all come from D. Griffing Johnson's Map of the World, 1847. These atlas maps are updated (esp. Africa). Colton took over the publication of the World Map in 1849, issued editions to 1868 (Ristow p318). Also, Johnson's N. America map is the inset N. America in Smith's Map of the U.S., the Canadas, etc. This first issue of Johnson's Family Atlas differs from the later 1860 edition in a small N.Y. (from the Colton U.S. map), small Texas, and many of the maps have fewer views or no views or different configurations. Clearly, this was a first attempt that was refined later in the year. Another issue of this same edition was published in Richmond, Virginia, the home town of Browning (I.L.). The California map originates with Johnson's New Illustrated and Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America, 1859 (1859 our copy, 1st ed. 1856), by D.G. and A.J. Joh
