Wilkinson, Robert
North America.
1804
Separate Map
Authors Wilkinson, Robert
Full Title North America, published the 12th of August 1804. By R. Wilkinson, No.58, Cornhill, London. E. Bourne Sculp.
List No 5156.000
Note First edition. Full color. This beautiful, rare map is the first to show the entire Louisiana Territory as part of the United States, both in the delineated boundaries on the map and in the table showing the possessions of the United States: "Province, Ceded by France 30 Apr. 1803, Louisiana." The Bradley "Map of The United States..." of June 2nd, 1804, is the first map to mention the event: ôThe French call the country West of Conecuh River Louisiana & have ceded it to the United States," but the Bradley map shows only a small portion of Louisiana Territory just west of the Mississippi River. Wilkinson follows Arrowsmith's geography (from his "New Discoveries..." map of 1802) in the Rocky Mountain and the Oregon River areas, but adds new settlements and place names not on Arrowsmith's map along the northwest coast. Franklinia is shown between Tennessee and North Carolina. Wheat trashes the 1824 issue (which is unchanged from the 1804) as hopelessly out of date, but this 1804 issue was not seen by Wheat and is very accurate and forward looking for its period. The large folio General Atlas that this map appeared in is elusive: it is not listed in any references (Phillips lists only Wilkinson's smaller General Atlas issues, even though he refers to one or two issues as folio in size). Wilkinson mentions publishing it in parts, with eleven maps completed by 1808 and thirty five completed by 1823 (noted on the index pages of his quarto General and Classical Atlases of those dates). It seems to be as scarce as this North America map.

Authors British North America-U.S. Boundary
Full Title A Map Of The Frontier Of British North America, And The United States, Describing The Boundary Line as fixed by the Treaty of 1783, which has never been respected by the American Government. Likewise the New Line of Demarcation as now proposed to be established between those States, and the British Provinces intended to secure the Independence of the Indians.
List No 3149.000
Note Removed from a British publication on boundary disputes with the U.S. At the top of the map is "No. 2." The map proposes that either the U.S. give up to Britain major parts of the Northeastern states, or Britain would take instead the entire North West Territories. This shows some of the disputes that lead to the War of 1812. The date is estimated. Map is without color. Shows boundaries, and some color outline administrative divisions. Includes explanatory remarks. Relief shown by hachures.

It covers the area of conflict along the U.S. and Canadian border, showing forts on the U.S. side and a great deal of detail on Canadian townships with a separate listing of towns in the various districts. The Karpinski copy adds Doolittle as engraver. The following year Kensett with Shelton put out a more general map of the U.S. showing vignettes of sea battles. Outline color. Not in Phillips. Scarce.

Full Title DeGroot's Map Of Nevada Territory Exhibiting A Portion Of Southern Oregon & Eastern California With County Boundaries, Mining Districts, Railroad Routes, Wagon Roads, Table Of Distances, &c. &c. Published By Warren Holt, 305 Montgomery St. San Francisco, Cal. 1863. Entered ... 1862 by Warren Holt ... California.
List No 3453.000
Note Very scarce detailed map of the early Nevada Territory. Wheat: "DeGroot's 'Nevada' of 1863 is truly an impressive performance...cartographical pioneering of the first order." Wheat believed that the map may have actually been published in 1862 (the date of its copyright) but dated 1863 to be up to date, because it shows the eastern boundary of Nevada at the 116th meridian instead of the 115th which was made the boundary in July of 1862. Much is shown in Nevada, but also in western California, Southern Oregon (the Owyhee is "unexplored") and a small corner of Washington Territory (now Idaho). According to Wheat, DeGroot had extensive first hand knowledge of the entire area and the map displays this with great clarity. What is unusual about this map is its sense of accuracy - it looks like nothing has been put in that the author was not sure of - much like Arrowsmith's maps of the early 1800's. W.H. has the Howell copy with DeGroot's printed Guide to the map mentioned by Wheat and Wagner Camp, probably the only copy of the map existing with the guide, and the only copy of the guide. Map is in full color by county.
