Colored by county, engraved by J.V.N. Throop. 1826 on title. Shows the Farmington Canal extended to Northampton, Mass., which is further than the uncolored 1826 edition, so we presume it was updated at least a year later. Later Editions published to 1853. The quality of the engraving is extraordinary. Throop engraved Ohio for Lucas' 1823 General Atlas. Tooley lists an O.H. Throop of New York who engraved for Amos Lay (New York 1832) as well as for Asa Whitney, and a D.S. Throop who also engraved for Lay (U.S. 1832). Map is bordered in green silk , dissected in 24 sections, and folds with marbled end sheets into a blue marbled slip case 26x21. |

J.C. French's subscription book, Cambridge, Mass. Jared Sparks (President of Harvard) is the first subscriber, followed by C.S. Cartee, and other eminent men. This book reveals that the Atlas was published in 27 parts starting in 1854, and was still available in parts in 1855 (see news articles in rear). Prices, bindings, coloring detailed. Apparently the atlas was only available by subscription in 1854, 55, 56, and part of 57. The list ends in 1857, perhaps indicating that the marketing changed, or that Mr. French went on to other pursuits. Book bound in full red leather with "Colton's Atlas" in gilt on cover. |

| Note |
Townsend's second collapsible globe with an internal mechanism for holding it open. The first collapsible Townsend globe was held open by an external stand - apparently no examples exist. Townsend was a school teacher in Vermont and later in California. His interest in globes was to produce a cheap globe that could be owned and used by students instead of a flat "map which, without explanation, is a false illustration, and can be understood only by a process of reasoning entirely beyond the mind of the child" (from Townsend's "Folding Globe Lessons"). This copy is presumed to be the second issue of this globe - an earlier issue has a somewhat different folder with only Townsend listed as publisher. However, it is not certain that both examples were not produced simultaneously in different cities. Both Globes are dated the same. Originally from the Welsh Collection. With a photocopy of Townsend's Folding-Globe Lessons, and an original advertising flyer for the globe. |
