A rare guide and map (actually two maps on one sheet) that is a "cousin" of Mitchell's "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with The Regions Adjoining" also issued in 1846. Although Howes lists this under Mitchell, Mitchell's name is not on any part of the guide or map, Streeter lists it under Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., the publisher. There are 62 pages of text and several woodcut illustrations. The two full color maps are titled "Map of That Part of the West Coast of North America Comprising Oregon and Upper California" (26x20) and "Map of the State of Texas With Portions of the Adjoining Regions" (26x20) both printed on one sheet. These maps are earlier states of similar maps with slightly different titles that appear in Mitchell's School Atlas of 1846, maps #13 and #15. The School Atlas was published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. and the maps in it were copyrighted by Mitchell (this may be the reason Howes lists this "Geographical Description..." under Mitchell). The stamped leather covers 13.5x8 to both of these guides are the same with the exception that they are red in this copy. So I presume that Thomas, Cowperthwait issued this to compete with Mitchell's guide, yet somehow had Mitchell's cooperation in using the maps and the covers (assuming that Mitchell had some control over these). The two maps are impressive taken together and although smaller than Mitchell's "New Map of Texas, Oregon and California" they are very elegant. This guide is much rarer that Mitchell's guide and sold for two and one half times more at the Streeter sale. |

A traveler's guide (similar to Mitchell) with an exceptional map (51x64). The map is titled "Die Vereinigten Staaten Von Nord-America." It is engraved by J.E. Woerl (see Tooley Dictionary) and printed (Litho) by B. Herder. It is beautifully engraved, extending from coast to coast and full of much interesting information. In the west it is largely a copy of Brue's "Mexique" map of 1834 and perhaps Brue's 1833 map of North America (not seen). Yet none of Smith's routes are shown. Wheat does not mention it, but does mention a later Bromme map of 1853, which is of the eastern half of the country with an inset of the west (see our 1855 copy, #4364). Buck traces the beginning of this guide to a larger work by Bromme published in 1840. The map here is pre Fremont, pre Mexican War and seems to show a large Texas Republic, making its date around 1840-42. The guide book and map are housed in printed paper case. The larger book originally published in 1840 contained travel descriptions as well as a listing of routes. This edition only lists the routes. Bromme published many travel guides with maps in the period of 1835-1865. Sabin provides the most detailed listings. Map in outline color. |

It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. This is the most scarce of the mid 19th century German atlases, at least in the United States collections or trade. Espenhorst devotes an entire section of his book to the "Atlasfamilie Sohr-Berghaus" but the LOC has no copies of any issues. Occasionally individual maps show up under the name of Flemming or Berghaus (as in Wheat and Day). One of the most interesting maps in the atlas, found in the 32 map supplement, is a reduced edition of Arrowsmith's Map of Texas of 1841, here probably issued in 1845 or 46, the date the supplement first appeared. Also: Californien, Oregon, Utah und Neu-Mejico, Das Oregon-Gebiet, c. 1846 and based on De Mofras, here tipped in to the atlas, Mexico, Mittel-America, Texas (Wheat 745), Vereinigte Staaten (Wheat 748), Britisches Nord-America (also from Arrowsmith), and a four sheet Vereinigte Staaten von Nordamerika by F. Handtke (not seen by Wheat). It appears that all the maps were lithographed by Flemming, which was unusual for the period -- most of the other German atlas of that date were engraved. An additional six maps follow the 32 map supplement, of the areas around European Turkey and Hungary. Maps are hand painted with outline color and bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with an orange paper label reading "Sohr's Hand-Atlas uber alle Theile der Erde." in gold, the new leather spine has "Sohr's Atlas" stamped in gilt. |

Initially, Colton's atlas was published by subscription (see our subscribers salesman's book) and in parts, then in a two volume edition with the first volume (North and South America) issued in 1855 and the second volume (Europe, Asia, etc.)in 1856. This atlas was the first world atlas produced by Colton, after many years of issuing pocket maps, wall maps, guides, and maps for books. The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period - it had a long publishing run, continuing for over thirty years (with the title changed to Colton's General Atlas after 1856). In this issue, the Texas map is single page, 2nd state. New Mexico and Utah 2nd state. The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period - it had a long publishing run, continuing for over thirty years (with the title changed to Colton's General Atlas after 1856). In this issue, the Texas map is single page, 2nd state. New Mexico and Utah 2nd state. Bound into quarter leather embossed brown cloth covered boards with "Colton's Atlas Of The World" and an illustration stamped in gold. The same title is stamped on the spine. Full color maps. |
