First edition of Tanner's guide. In pocket map form, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States." |

The non geological version of the Troost map in pocket form. Tanner published this map in two forms: colored geologically to accompany Tanner's publication of Gerard Troost's Geological Survey of the Environs of Philadelphia, 1826, and, (eliminating "designed to illustrate the geological survey made by G. Troost" from the title and the geological coloring), as a map of Philadelphia and the adjacent country. Marcou says the Troost book and map are rare. This pocket map version is not in Phillips and is quite scarce. See Tanner 1829 Memoir catalogue, No. 50 and 51 for a listing of this map in both forms. Covers are a red leather 10.5x6.5 cm. and stamped with "Philadelphia." in gilt. |

Early edition of Canal map of 1834, on the 1823 base map. See No. 19 in Tanner's Memoir catalogue of 1829 - this is a listing of this map (we assume) published in 1829 or earlier. Later, it became the map used in Tanner's book of 1834 on Pennsylvania and New Jersey Canals and Railroads. This map is the same as the atlas map of 1823, except the existing and proposed canals and railroads are shown in color and many are delineated that do not appear on the atlas map. Outline color by state. Map is folded into red leather covers 15x8.5 with "Pennsylvania Canals" stamped in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich. Relief shown by hachures. |

By Tanner's son. Uses Universal Atlas map of Philadelphia. Publications by Tanner's son Henry Jr. are not common. He is listed as publisher of several of H.S. Tanner's works in the early 1840's (see 1842 Traveler's Guide and 1841 "Central States") but this is the only work we have seen where he is the author as well. Excellent 36 page catalogue of "Maps and Geographical Works for sale by H. Tanner, Jun'r. Philadelphia." The works listed are all the H.S. Tanner publications. It appears that Tanner's sons, T.R. Tanner and H. Tanner, Jun'r. divided the business between New York and Philadelphia respectively and took over responsibility for selling H.S. Tanner's products , and others, from 1840 until around 1850. T.R. was in partnership with John Disturnell for a time in the early 1840's (see Tanner and Disturnell). Map and guide are in brown cloth covers 13x8.5 with "Philadelphia City Guide. 1841" stamped in gold. |

Scarce - Eberstadt: "A very rare guide, with a description of the new territory, its government, judiciary, counties, population, list of townships etc." The map shows the eastern part of the Iowa Territory, along the Mississippi River, and is more detailed than the General Land Office survey maps of 1839-40. Map has many changes from 1839 edition. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. |

Smith considered this to be "the most successful of our maps" and it is indeed a beautiful map and a fine example of early lithography printed by P.S. Duval. Although copyrighted by Robert Pearsal Smith, Ristow states that this map was considered by Smith father, John Jay Smith, to be his own work. There is a view of Girard College and another of Laurel Hill Cemetery in the lower corners of the map engraved by A. Kollner, one of Philadelphia earliest lithographic artists. This copy is from the Kollner collection of Nicholas Biddle Wainwright, who wrote the standard book on Philadelphia lithography and also the authoritative book on Kollner. Map is folded into burgundy leather covers 14x8.5 with "Sidney's Map Of Ten Miles Around Philadelphia" in gilt. |

This map was issued with Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" (the book is not present). A later issue of this map appeared in Colton's pocket map titled "Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico & c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" (see our #170). This first issue is distinguished from the second issue by the following differences: On the main map, the second issue has "Printed at Ackerman's rooms 120 Fulton St. N.Y." under the "Entered...." line below the title, the table of distances on the second issue adds "New Orleans to Havana" and "New Orleans (actually the ditto sign ) to Vera Cruz" and drops those miles on the lines in the Gulf of Mexico linking those ports, on the inset map of the Gold Region, the second issue has "Quicksilver Mines" below San Jose instead of "Quicksilver" and the second lists three southern rivers not listed in the first - Stanislaus, Towalumnes, and Acumnes, and finally, in the second issue the decorative border of vines is changed in ways too subtle to list here. None of the prior authorities have noted these differences between the two states. Colton also published a version of this first issue on heavier paper, unfolded with wide margins, and without the lines or distances on them linking the ports of New Orleans, Vera Cruz and Havana, in the Gulf of Mexico, this may be the earliest issue. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian is Washington, D.C. |

Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |

Third edition. Shows Colona, Shoshone, Nevada. The maker of this map must have seen copies of Mitchell's 1859 New National Map - this has the same proposed territorial names that Mitchell used that year. This also has a line dividing the northern and southern states in the civil war. According to Phillips Maps, this was also No. 48 in the Atlas Universel for 1862. Map is dissected into 21 sections and mounted on tan linen with the book plate of Andriveau-Goujon. Covers are dark green cloth 23.5x14.5 with "Etats-Unis Et Mexique. Andriveau-Goujon. Rue Du Bac, 2I." stamped in gold on the front with the same embossed gold and green globe as the 1862 issue. The spine is stamped with "Etats-Unis" in gold. Map has full color by state. |
