Note	The map, 79x95, is from Johnson's 1857 Map of the Union, and becomes Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico, the West Indies etc. of 1861. The map shows all the interesting changes of 1859: Colona, Nevada, Arizona, Dakota, and an unnamed Idaho. Wheat says, "The map is a most important one for its showing of political subdivisions in the West, and for its tracing of the 'Mail Route,' on the route of the Butterfield Stageline." Its function here is to show the possible routes between the U.S. and Mexico by steamship. NUC lists an edition of 1859 at the Library of Congress. Sabin only lists this 1860 edition. A second edition was published in 1861 with a map of the United States by Julius Bien (see D. Sloan Bulletin Nine). Bound with brown cloth covered boards with title embossed on cover.

Note	More refined version than that in the 1869 "Yosemite Guide-Book" but less refined than the version in the 1870 "Yosemite Guide-Book", hence our selection of 1869 for the estimated date. The result of a surveys begun in 1863 under the direction of Whitney, the State Geologist. This map is among the most detailed and largest scale maps published of Yosemite during this part of the 19th century, rivaled only by the Wheeler Survey map of Yosemite published in 1883. Because of the folds, this map appears to have been printed as a part of a book, either "The Yosemite Book" or "The Yosemite Guide-Book". This map, all versions of which have the date 1865 printed on the map, is in at least four editions with the most noteworthy aspect being the revision of the rendering of the Valley floor: the first editions had a very inaccurate alignment of the Merced river, this edition of the map is the first to have a good river alignment plus the following features were added: Valley floor redrawn, limited number of Valley structures drawn and labeled including "Ferry", "Leidig's Hotel", "Hutching's Hotel", "Hutching's Hs." (House), Lamon's Hs.", three orchards, "Ladders Bridge", "Cap of Liberty", "Engraved & printed by Julius Bien, N.Y."

Note	Date based upon the 1870 publication date of the Guide-Book volume with a map of the same content, our Image No. 5901004. Relief shown by hachures. Flat map on heavy paper in mylar. Much content added to map and a little removed from 1869 edition of Guide-Book map, our Image No. 4212020. A few examples of additions: "Hopkins" (by Clouds Rest), "Lake May", "Cathedral Creek" drainage, "Peregoy's", "Harden Lake", "Hite's Cove", "Hennessy's", and many roads. Among items removed: "Hog Ranch", "Wilsons", one of the routes running northeast from Tenaya Lake, and "Milk Ranch" (relabeled "Mill Ranch").
