Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. J.C. French's subscription book, Cambridge, Mass. Jared Sparks (President of Harvard) is the first subscriber, followed by C.S. Cartee, and other eminent men. This book reveals that the Atlas was published in 27 parts starting in 1854, and was still available in parts in 1855 (see news articles in rear). Prices, bindings, coloring detailed. Apparently the atlas was only available by subscription in 1854, 55, 56, and part of 57. The list ends in 1857, perhaps indicating that the marketing changed, or that Mr. French went on to other pursuits. Book bound in full red leather with "Colton's Atlas" in gilt on cover. |

The map, 79x95, is from Johnson's 1857 Map of the Union, and becomes Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico, the West Indies etc. of 1861. The map shows all the interesting changes of 1859: Colona, Nevada, Arizona, Dakota, and an unnamed Idaho. Wheat says, "The map is a most important one for its showing of political subdivisions in the West, and for its tracing of the 'Mail Route,' on the route of the Butterfield Stageline." Its function here is to show the possible routes between the U.S. and Mexico by steamship. NUC lists an edition of 1859 at the Library of Congress. Sabin only lists this 1860 edition. A second edition was published in 1861 with a map of the United States by Julius Bien (see D. Sloan Bulletin Nine). Bound with brown cloth covered boards with title embossed on cover. |

This is the scarce Senate issue with four maps by "Baron" Egloffstein. Egloffstein used a unique engraving process to achieve a superb rendering of topographical features, he used the same technique in the map is drew for Macomb's Report (see our #2699). Of the maps in Ives's Report Wheat said "The two maps were drawn by F.W. Egloffstein...the first...is one of his best." Rare in this form with the two additional geological maps in color wash. These only appear in the Senate issue. They are the same as the two "normal" maps that appear in the House and Senate issue, but they have colors overlaid to show geological formations.
