The 1826 edition adds the delineation of topography adjoining the river systems, roads in almost every county, numerous changes in the emerging coal regions in the east central part of the state, more mountains and plateaus drawn in, and B. Tanner's name as publisher below the neat line in the lower right. With black top and bottom rollers. Outline color by county.

Note This is called Melish's greatest work (Ristow). 1st ed. 1822. Melish died in 1822, eds. were published in 1824, 1826, and 1832 by the state (which explains B. Tanner listing as publisher instead of Melish). Morris did a revised ed. in 1849 (see our copy). Melish spent more than six years on this monumental project, which he hoped would serve as a model for other state map. The map was sponsored by the state and based on individual county surveys. Map has outline color by county, blue cloth edging, and is dissected into 40 sections. Folds into marbled end sheets which slips into a half leather marbled cover 35x21 with "Pennsylvania" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note Reissue and updating of Melish's original map. Engraved by Edward Yeager (B. Tanner, the original engraver is not given credit). The map is the same base map as Melish's edition, with the addition of new towns, counties, roads, railroads, etc. There are two new tables listed in the lower right corner, on Public Works and the Coal Trade (replacing Melish's list of sources of the map). There was also an 1848 edition by Morris, which was very similar to the 1849. Full color by township with counties outlined. With black top and bottom rollers. Map is edged in silk.
