This copy is a mixed state, as is usually the case, with the title and dedication in the first state. It is fully colored by county by a contemporary hand. Wheat & Brun list the first four states as 1792, with states V and VI as 1795, state VII as 1798, and state VIII as 1806. Ristow lists later editions of 1816 and 1817 published by Emmor Kimber in Philadelphia. Howell also published a smaller Map of Pennsylvania, reduced from the large map, in 1792, with later issues in 1795 and 1796, Ristow lists editions of 1811 and 1817. Howell's maps were the first maps of the state published after the revolution, and were used until Melish published his map in 1822. Samuel Lewis used Howell's map as the source for his Pennsylvania map in Carey's American Atlas of 1795. Map is dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into its original brown leather slip case 24x17.5 with "Howell's Map" printed on the front in ink, and then into a new dark green cloth folding case 25x18 with -Pennsylvania R. State of New York with part …
1818
Case Map
Authors Eddy, John H.
Full Title The State of New York with part of the adjacent States. By John H. Eddy, Geographer, New York 1818. Engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. Philadelphia. Printed by Saml. Maverick N. York. New York Published By James Eastburn & Co. At The Literary Rooms In Broadway.
List No 2622.000
Note This map was published after Eddy's death (see biography of Eddy in American Monthly Magazine and Critical Review, May, 1818). Eddy was deaf, and died young at 35, on December 22, 1817. He also published a map of the county 30 miles around New York City (circular) in 1811 (see our copy), and a map of the western part of New York State for the canal commissioners in 1811. An extraordinary map maker about whom little has been known. He planned an American Atlas and a Map of the State of New Jersey, both abandoned after his death (perhaps Tanner's American Atlas was somehow related to Eddy's proposed Atlas). Tanner lists the three New York maps as sources for his New York Map in his American Atlas and has only the highest praise for Eddy. This New York State map is remarkable for its clarity of execution and detail. New York state counties and other states with outline color. Maps is dissected into 16 sheets, and lays in a new burgundy cloth folding case 29x25 with "State Of New York J.H. Eddy 1818" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Full Title Map of Illinois Constructed from the Surveys in the General Land Office and other Documents By John Melish. Saml. Harrison, sct. Entered according to Act of Congress the 16th day of April 1818. Philadelphia. Published by John Melish. Improved to 1820.
List No 5537.000
Note Melish, in his first edition of "A Geographical Description of the United States," (1816) wrote of his plans to publish a series of sheet maps on a uniform scale that would form an atlas of the United States. He reiterated this plan in the 2nd and 3rd editions of the "Geographical Description" and expanded upon it in "A Geographical Description of the World" in 1818. According to Ristow, this plan to publish the maps at the same scale was "a new and revolutionary idea that facilitated size comparisons." Indiana was the first to be published in 1817. Tennessee was published in 1817. The Illinois map followed in 1818, with an "improved" edition in 1819. No mention is made in any sources of this map, "improved to 1820." Alabama was completed in 1818, Mississippi in 1819, and Louisiana in 1820. Only these six maps were completed before Melish died in 1822. A copy of the 1818 Illinois map is held at the Library of Congress. The 1819 map is held at the Newberry Library and the National Archives. No copy of the 1820 edition has been mentioned in the references. The map is in outline color by county with township and survey lines shown.
