Note	Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). Note	Full color by counties, with heavy outlines around the states. detail mining districts, political divisions, emigrant trails, the Santa Fe Trail, the Pony Express Route, several proposed Union Pacific railroads, and Indian tribes and territories. This important map went through several different states during its publication period from 1860 to 1870. This critical period in westward expansion saw incredible development and change throughout the region. This, the 1864 Johnson and Ward version represents a complete re-engraving of the 1862-1863 map. Johnson added considerable detail in the mountainous regions of California, Nevada and Colorado. Arizona and New Mexico appear as independent territories but shows the old "New Mexico" county structure. The southern boundary of Nevada with Arizona is set at 37 degrees of Latitude such that Las Vegas, shown within Arizona. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

Note	Preface, Explanation. This was one of the first United States atlases to exclusively feature railroad lines, showing minimal topography (in this later edition more topographical features are added, earlier editions have fewer features shown ) and only showing towns on or next to the railroads lines. We find the maps most interesting and beautiful, although some might find them a bit spare. This copy was published late in 1874 and is the most complete edition. Contains maps of Washington, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, etc. (similar to our early 1874 edition). The western United States maps are especially interesting. Full color. Bound in quarter leather dark brown and red cloth covered boards stamped with the title "Asher & Adams' new commercial and statistical alas and gazetteer of the United States." in gilt, the same title is blind stamped on the back cover.
