This is the first complete edition of this map, the largest wall map of the United States produced by Americans at that time (although Karrow 1-1418 lists an almost complete 1815 edition). Differences from the 1818 edition include Illinois and Indiana shown as Territories, a large Mississippi with no Alabama, and no Arkansas Territory. Also, there are far fewer roads shown, and fewer settlements laid down, especially in Canada. See our #432 for a proposal for publishing this map. With black top and bottom rollers and dark green linen edging. Outline color by state or territory. |

The date is estimated, the only date on the map being 1812. Compared to the 1812 edition, Alabama Territory is added (1817) and Mississippi is a state (1817). Indiana Territory has been divided into Illinois and Indiana Territories, Missouri Territory appears with Louisiana as a state (1812), and there are many additions of towns and roads in the Midwest and Southeast. Chicago appears. The only major topographical changes we can find are in the Florida/Georgia border and coast line. The next issue of this map was the 1820 dated issue. Comparing this map to the Arrowsmith "additions to 1819" issue of the Map of the United States, one is impressed that Tardieu's map is far more up to date. Even though Tardieu began by copying the Arrowsmith map, his editions are consistently more current with the political and topographical changes of the times. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 15 sections, and backed and edged in linen. Outline color by state. Sheets folds into original brown marbled slip case 22x15 embossed in gold with "Metz. Ecole Royale D'Artillerie" on the front and "Tardieu. Etats-Unis D'Amerique" on the spine. |

Highly detailed, goes west to 110th meridian. Streeter 3804, 3803. Probably influenced by Melish, nonetheless this is an outstanding map, with much of interest in the Missouri Territory. There is a small vignette of a "Traveler" placed over the title, indicating that this was a map to be used as a travel guide. Shows the new Alabama Territory, an interesting configuration of Illinois around Lake Michigan, and strange east west running mountain ranges leading to the Rockies. Lewis and Clark information is incorporated in the upper Missouri River area. The northern boundary with Canada is strange: it follows the 47.5 parallel and the Upper Missouri River. Outline color. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Philadelphia. |

Melish, in his first edition of "A Geographical Description of the United States," (1816) wrote of his plans to publish a series of sheet maps on a uniform scale that would form an atlas of the United States. He reiterated this plan in the 2nd and 3rd editions of the "Geographical Description" and expanded upon it in "A Geographical Description of the World" in 1818. According to Ristow, this plan to publish the maps at the same scale was "a new and revolutionary idea that facilitated size comparisons." Indiana was the first to be published in 1817. Tennessee was published in 1817. The Illinois map followed in 1818, with an "improved" edition in 1819. No mention is made in any sources of this map, "improved to 1820." Alabama was completed in 1818, Mississippi in 1819, and Louisiana in 1820. Only these six maps were completed before Melish died in 1822. A copy of the 1818 Illinois map is held at the Library of Congress. The 1819 map is held at the Newberry Library and the National Archives. No copy of the 1820 edition has been mentioned in the references. The map is in outline color by county with township and survey lines shown. |
