This little school atlas is the beginning of a long run: next comes the Carey and Lea "Juvenile atlas or a series of maps to illustrate the Old and New Worlds", 1822 (Bill Mayer has only copy we have seen), then Carey & Lea's 1825 edition of this atlas, then the Key edition and the Hunt edition of the "Cabinet atlas" of 1830 with 28 maps added, then C.S. Williams "A new general atlas" of 1832 and finally the Andrus and Judd 1833 "New general atlas." All have the U.S. map engraved by J.G. Melish, son of John Melish (see Ristow, Am. Maps and Mapmakers) and the other thirteen maps that appear first in this 1820 School Atlas. Maps in outline color. Cover title. Publisher's advertisement on back cover.

Note Maps say "Engraved for Woodbridge's Rudiments of Geography." Earliest Woodbridge atlas we have seen. The World in Hemispheres map does not show Palmer's land off South America. The title says "Larger Atlas" while the maps mention "Rudiments" so the use of this book is transitional - it has the same group of maps as Rudiments of Geography, which was published first in 1821. The advertisement in the back of the book clarifies things: "The following atlas was originally prepared to accompany the 'Rudiments of Geography'...The whole have been revised, and some additions made, to adapt them to a work on the same general plan with the "Rudiments," which is now preparing for the higher classes of schools." Thus this book is the first edition of Woodbridge's Modern Atlas, which did not come out in final form until late 1824 (that is when the text is copyrighted)-and this book may have served as Woodbridge's more "advanced" atlas until late 1824 when the Modern Atlas was first issued. Maps are hand painted with outline color or are without color. Covers are marbled paper covered cardboard 25x16 with a paper label printed with the above title in black.

Philadelphia 1849 Published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Entered ... 1848, by Thomas, Cowperthwait, & Co. ... Pennsylvania. (with 5 inset maps).
List No 2766.001
Note This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text.

This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover.

Note First edition, second state. See notes to the first edition, first state. This probably appeared in late 1854. In addition to the map changes already noted, this copy has an advertisement inside front cover for Colton's maps that is different from the first state copy's advertisement -- it mentions the coming publication of the National Atlas, the American Atlas, and the Atlas of the World -- none of which are mentioned in the earlier state's advertisement. Note This is the second edition, with the 1855 copyright date and no other date on the map. There are small changes in the main map (El Paso, Texas and Nephi, Utah are added, as well as additional Pacific railroad routes) but the inset map of the Gadsden Purchase and the untitled map of the U.S. are largely the same. Map is full color by state, folded into dark gray cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. Relief shown by hachures.

Note Fourth edition, with the inset at the lower left of the United States replaced by a taller, large scale inset map of the eastern counties of Nebraska and Kansas. The main map is mostly unchanged, with only a few railroad routes added. The addition of the detailed county map inset was probably due to the "bleeding Kansas" troubles of 1856. Map is full color by state, folded into brown cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. Relief shown by hachures.

Note This is the third reissue of the 1859 Gunn map of Kansas, which was originally issued with a Handbook showing routes to the Mines, etc. The 1859 edition was by Gunn only, Mitchell was added to the 1861 and all subsequent editions (1862, 64, 65, 66, and 67). The 1859 edition is very rare (Howes "d"), and the later editions of the map only are scarce (not in Heaston's list or Phillips). Karrow lists all the editions except the 1867 (see our copy). The map is of eastern Kansas west to the 98th meridian, with an inset of the "Routes from the Missouri River to the Kansas Gold Mines." This inset does not show Colorado, even though it was formed in 1860. There is a list of the Population of Kansas Counties, and a vignette of an Indian. Mitchell issued his own Sectional Map of Kansas in 1859 (Karrow 13-0585). There is an advertisement for Mitchell's Law practice and Land Agency on the inside of the map cover. Border color by county. Covers are a dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Gunn & Mitchell's New Map Of Kansas And The Gold Mines" stamped in gilt.

Note 2nd edition. Wheat: "the first 'indigenous' (Colorado) map of importance...a truly imposing map, a credit to all who had a hand in it..." Rare. The 1st edition was published in 1862 with a different title (Map of the Colorado Territory, Embracing the Central Gold Region...) and coloring (it does not emphasize the system of parks) but the same topography and political delineation. This 1865 edition colors the parks in deep blue (they look like water) and the continental divide in bright red and yellow. Ellis lists this map under Monk, has the copyright which was issued in 1862 (when he published the first edition). Streeter mentions that the 1862 edition was the first separate map of Colorado and that it also appeared on a smaller scale (18 miles/inch) as an inset in the huge Pratt and Buell "Map of the Gold Regions in...Colorado Territory" of 1862. Wheat mentions and Phillips lists an 1866 issue of the 1862 map, with J.H. Colton as the publisher. To further complicate matters, our copy of the 1865 edition has covers 16x12 with a printed blue label saying "Monk's Map of Colorado Territory" (barely legible) and a paste down advertisement for "J.H. Colton's Geographical Establishment" on the inside front cover. So Colton was distributing the 1865 edition and then took over publishing the map in 1866. Gilpin wrote "The Central Gold Region" in 1860 with six maps, republished in 1873 with additions and titled "Mission of the American People," which had a map showing the system of parks in manner similar to this map.
