This is a composite wall map incorporating the famous 1849 Ord Survey (Robinson's first Los Angeles map) and the Hancock and Hansen survey maps of 1853 and 1859. This is the first appearance of the manuscript Ord Survey as a printed map and is therefore of considerable importance. Bancroft and Thayer were real estate brokers active in the 1870's, Robinson dates the map as circa 1875 (the map is undated) based on their activities and the fact that the map "was a popular wall decoration for real estates offices in the 1870's and '80's." The Ord Survey is in the middle of the map with the Hancock and Hansen surveys surrounding it. The Ord Survey shows the original pueblo buildings, the farms around them, a small group of lots, water courses and hills. In contrast, the later Hancock and Hansen Surveys divide the lands outside the original town center into much larger rectangular lots of equal size, imposing a grid pattern on the earlier meandering lots that is both visually striking and a portent of the phenomenal growth of settlement to come. Separately, we acquired the covers for the pocket map version (without the pocket map) in which someone wrote in a contemporary hand "This cover contained the copy of the 1st map of the City of Los Angeles made in 1849 by Lt. Ord and is now framed and hanging in my office. I paid $5.00 for it." Covers are dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Published By Bancroft & Thayer, Real Estate Brokers, 21 Spring Street, And W.H.J. The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. 1st ed 1868. From Pacific States map. This is the only edition of this map published by A.L. Bancroft. H.H. Bancroft published the first edition in 1868. The southern mate to this map was published in many more editions: 1868, 71, 73, 76 and 78. When comparing this edition to the original 1867 "mother" map, there are many changes in the eastern half of the map, especially the area around Yellowstone Lake, western Montana and eastern Idaho. The litho is beginning to look tired in some places. Full color by county. Index map to a set of 164 spectacular, large format, sharp, black and white vertical aerial photography partially overlapping images covering San Francisco north of a line approximately between Merced Lake and Candlestick Point. Resolution generally better than one foot and much higher with high contrast features, for example the paint striping on a basketball court. Relative heights frequently discernible based on shadow cast of objects and structures. Handwritten date on index map indicates photographs taken in August, 1938. Owned by the San Francisco Public Library. (Authorship almost certainly incorrectly spelled in handwriting on index sheet as Harrison-Rikker). He married Charlotte Seward in the mid-1920s, after divorcing, he married Esther Miriam Munson in 1936 Aerial Photographer Harrison Clay (Chesley) Ryker (1898-1981) was born in Oakdale, CA. . He served in the U.S. Army for several years in Germany with the post-World War I occupational forces, and partook of educational opportunities at the University of California, Berkeley. Expanding on his hobby in photography, Mr. Ryker teamed with various pilots beginning aerial photography services out of the Oakland Airport and throughout the West. Colleagues included Lage Wernstedt of the U.S. Forest Service. He also worked with the Fairchild Aerial Camera Company (including an aerial survey of Puerto Rico) and Clyde Sunderland of Pacific Aerial Surveys. As well, he took photographs of the devastating 1923 Berkeley Fire, archived in The Bancroft Library. By 1938 Mr. Ryker was listed in business as a map publisher (see Polk's Oakland 1938 Street and Avenue Guide) based at 1924 Franklin St., Oakland. At that time, he had at least one patent pending for a stereoscope used for aerial photograph interpretation. (Note continued in Pub Note field below). |
