This is a composite wall map incorporating the famous 1849 Ord Survey (Robinson's first Los Angeles map) and the Hancock and Hansen survey maps of 1853 and 1859. This is the first appearance of the manuscript Ord Survey as a printed map and is therefore of considerable importance. Bancroft and Thayer were real estate brokers active in the 1870's, Robinson dates the map as circa 1875 (the map is undated) based on their activities and the fact that the map "was a popular wall decoration for real estates offices in the 1870's and '80's." The Ord Survey is in the middle of the map with the Hancock and Hansen surveys surrounding it. The Ord Survey shows the original pueblo buildings, the farms around them, a small group of lots, water courses and hills. In contrast, the later Hancock and Hansen Surveys divide the lands outside the original town center into much larger rectangular lots of equal size, imposing a grid pattern on the earlier meandering lots that is both visually striking and a portent of the phenomenal growth of settlement to come. Separately, we acquired the covers for the pocket map version (without the pocket map) in which someone wrote in a contemporary hand "This cover contained the copy of the 1st map of the City of Los Angeles made in 1849 by Lt. Ord and is now framed and hanging in my office. I paid $5.00 for it." Covers are dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Published By Bancroft & Thayer, Real Estate Brokers, 21 Spring Street, And W.H.J. Brooks, Searcher of Records, Los Angeles, Cal." stamped in gilt. |

Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color. |

This important map went through several different states during its publication period from 1860 to 1870. This critical period in westward expansion saw incredible development and change throughout the region. This, the 1864 Johnson and Ward version represents a complete re-engraving of the 1862-1863 map. Johnson added considerable detail in the mountainous regions of California, Nevada and Colorado. Arizona and New Mexico appear as independent territories but shows the old "New Mexico" county structure. The southern boundary of Nevada with Arizona is set at 37 degrees of Latitude such that Las Vegas, shown within Arizona. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |

Wheat writes several pages about this map, being impressed with its up to date cartography. Williamson's proposed route through the Owyhee to the Idaho mines is shown, as well as much current detail in central Nevada and all of California. The influence of Williamson's 1866 "Map of Parts of California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho Territory" (both the published and the ms version) is obvious. A wheel shows the "Difference of time between S. Francisco and other important Cities." This may be Louis Nell's first commercial map, before his extensive work for the Wheeler Survey in the 1870's and his Colorado maps of the 1880's. The railroad map shows the Union Pacific completed to Cheyenne and the Central Pacific to the Nevada border. This is both a beautiful map and an excellent depiction of California and Nevada just before the completion of the railroad. Wheat mentions that the towns of the Humboldt valley are sprinkled with names that disappear in a few years with the coming of the railroad. Full color by county. |

16" pair of Terrestrial and Celestial globes. These globes were originally issued by Copley and sold by Blunt in New York in 1852. Joslin revised and reissued them (this pair) in 1869, continuing until the 1890's (Warner). These are both floor stand models and are illustrated in Joslin's catalogue of the early 1870's (see our copy). Franklin Globes also issued the Copley Globes, but they may have been made by Joslin or Nims for Franklin (Warner). "National Park" is shown in the U.S. where Yellowstone Park was created in 1872, but we think this is anticipatory rather than after the fact. The "corrected to 1870" was usually done a year or two before the date (Coffeen). The Copley globes are beautifully executed, have a "modern" look, and are "extremely detailed, even to the point of obscurity" (Warner). Warner further states that "no examples of the Joslin 1869 state of these globes are known." This pair may be the only survivors. Copley won a gold medal in 1852 from the American Institute for the globes (see Transactions of the American Institute 1852, p124-5). Warner lists a Franklin 16" Terrestrial (3-88) by Nims that is similar to this. Total height from base to top is 43 inches. |

This map is among the most detailed and largest scale maps of Yosemite issued during this part of the 19th century, rivaled only by the Wheeler Survey map of Yosemite published in 1883. This is a second issue of this map, here mounted as a wall map. This is the same as the first issue that appeared with the Yosemite Guide Book (see our #4212) except that it adds "Hite's Cove" on the Merced River just slightly west of its junction with Devil's Gulch. In the (1870) third issue (our #4650) Hite's Cove is relocated to a point just south of the Merced on the road titled "Road to Hite's Cove" and the erasure of the prior label is apparent. We have dated this second issue (1869) as a best guess. With black top and bottom rollers, and pink linen edging. Map is without color. |
