This is an exceptionally attractive map of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. It was issued with Richardson's Texas Almanac of 1861 or possibly the 1862 issue (almanac not present). Railroads completed and in progress are particularly well delineated, and a box of text in the lower left corner (pasted on top of an earlier printing) lists the completed railroads and their proposed extensions as well as one canal, the Galveston Bay and Brazos River. In the lower right is an inset map of the proposed route of the Arkansas Railroad. The topography, coasts and rivers are accurately delineated, with the source being the outstanding Map of Texas and part of Mexico, 1857, issued by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers (see our #5141). Pressler's Map of the State of Texas, 1858, is a secondary source, as is J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas which was published in Desilver's 1859 (Mitchell's) New Universal Atlas (see our #4557). Richardson's map is a serious production, far more up to date than the Colton, Johnson, or Desilver/Mitchell atlas maps of 1861, and more accurate in west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico than the Pressler 1858 Texas (although Pressler issued an 1862 revised edition, not seen by us, that may be much improved). The first issue of Richardson's map appeared in the 1859 edition of the Texas Almanac, with the map dated 1859, copyright 1858 (Winkler 1052), again in the 1860 Almanac, with the map dated 1860, and our copy, dated 1861 and presumably appearing in the 1861 Almanac (Rosenberg 322B states that the Almanacs for 1857, and 1862-65 did not contain maps). Two other maps appeared in the Richardson Almanacs: J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas (from Desilver's atlas) in the 1858 Almanac (Winkler 886 note) and Richardson's New Map of Texas, published by G.W. and C.B. Colton (Day 428 - about the same size as the Colton atlas map of 1867 and possibly related) and issued in the 1867 Almanac. Desilver stopped map publishing ar |

Reps calls this "Gifford's finest and most ambitious view" and Peters refers to it as "This important and rare panorama." It was issued in three forms: on thin paper mounted on cloth and folded into an album with covers, on heavy paper as five separate sheets, and on heavy paper backed with linen and attached to wooden rollers (wall map style). This copy is the first form, but without the album. There are 125 numbered references in the lower margin identifying buildings, etc. Printed by L. Nagel. There was a second edition in 1863. This copy originally had the five sheets joined and folded into covers, with the original blue title label on the verso of the first sheet. |

Very scarce detailed map of the early Nevada Territory. Wheat: "DeGroot's 'Nevada' of 1863 is truly an impressive performance...cartographical pioneering of the first order." Wheat believed that the map may have actually been published in 1862 (the date of its copyright) but dated 1863 to be up to date, because it shows the eastern boundary of Nevada at the 116th meridian instead of the 115th which was made the boundary in July of 1862. Much is shown in Nevada, but also in western California, Southern Oregon (the Owyhee is "unexplored") and a small corner of Washington Territory (now Idaho). According to Wheat, DeGroot had extensive first hand knowledge of the entire area and the map displays this with great clarity. What is unusual about this map is its sense of accuracy - it looks like nothing has been put in that the author was not sure of - much like Arrowsmith's maps of the early 1800's. W.H. has the Howell copy with DeGroot's printed Guide to the map mentioned by Wheat and Wagner Camp, probably the only copy of the map existing with the guide, and the only copy of the guide. Map is in full color by county. |

An attractive map with ornate decorative border, and most likely the first separately published map of this new state. Outline color showing state borders. Not in Stephenson. Tooley lists an (1862) edition (although West Virginia was created in 1863) and the 1864. 2nd edition. Wheat: "the first 'indigenous' (Colorado) map of importance...a truly imposing map, a credit to all who had a hand in it..." Rare. The 1st edition was published in 1862 with a different title (Map of the Colorado Territory, Embracing the Central Gold Region...) and coloring (it does not emphasize the system of parks) but the same topography and political delineation. This 1865 edition colors the parks in deep blue (they look like water) and the continental divide in bright red and yellow. Ellis lists this map under Monk, has the copyright which was issued in 1862 (when he published the first edition). Streeter mentions that the 1862 edition was the first separate map of Colorado and that it also appeared on a smaller scale (18 miles/inch) as an inset in the huge Pratt and Buell "Map of the Gold Regions in...Colorado Territory" of 1862. Wheat mentions and Phillips lists an 1866 issue of the 1862 map, with J.H. Colton as the publisher. To further complicate matters, our copy of the 1865 edition has covers 16x12 with a printed blue label saying "Monk's Map of Colorado Territory" (barely legible) and a paste down advertisement for "J.H. Colton's Geographical Establishment" on the inside front cover. So Colton was distributing the 1865 edition and then took over publishing the map in 1866. Gilpin wrote "The Central Gold Region" in 1860 with six maps, republished in 1873 with additions and titled "Mission of the American People," which had a map showing the system of parks in manner similar to this map. |
