Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color. |

This is an exceptionally attractive map of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. It was issued with Richardson's Texas Almanac of 1861 or possibly the 1862 issue (almanac not present). Railroads completed and in progress are particularly well delineated, and a box of text in the lower left corner (pasted on top of an earlier printing) lists the completed railroads and their proposed extensions as well as one canal, the Galveston Bay and Brazos River. In the lower right is an inset map of the proposed route of the Arkansas Railroad. The topography, coasts and rivers are accurately delineated, with the source being the outstanding Map of Texas and part of Mexico, 1857, issued by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers (see our #5141). Pressler's Map of the State of Texas, 1858, is a secondary source, as is J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas which was published in Desilver's 1859 (Mitchell's) New Universal Atlas (see our #4557). Richardson's map is a serious production, far more up to date than the Colton, Johnson, or Desilver/Mitchell atlas maps of 1861, and more accurate in west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico than the Pressler 1858 Texas (although Pressler issued an 1862 revised edition, not seen by us, that may be much improved). The first issue of Richardson's map appeared in the 1859 edition of the Texas Almanac, with the map dated 1859, copyright 1858 (Winkler 1052), again in the 1860 Almanac, with the map dated 1860, and our copy, dated 1861 and presumably appearing in the 1861 Almanac (Rosenberg 322B states that the Almanacs for 1857, and 1862-65 did not contain maps). Two other maps appeared in the Richardson Almanacs: J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas (from Desilver's atlas) in the 1858 Almanac (Winkler 886 note) and Richardson's New Map of Texas, published by G.W. and C.B. There are several editions of this map: The first appears in 1862 (Wheat 1046 - "notably rare") under the title of "New Map of the State of California Exhibiting..." and copyrighted in 1861. The Nevada-Utah border in on the 116th meridian. Then in 1863, another issue appears with the same title, but dated 1863 and copyrighted in 1862. A table of distances is added above the title, and the Nevada-Utah boundary is still on the 116th meridian (Wheat 1070). The next issue is still 1863, same title, but the copyright 1863 (Streeter 2880). Then another 1863 issue with the title as above, but with "A" before "New Map..." and Nagel's name dropped (Wheat 1071 - illustrated p. 77). This issue is discussed at length by Wheat and is called "a Nevada map of first importance." There are many additions in Nevada from the prior issues - Wheat delineates them. Our copy is a variant of Wheat 1071 - there is no "A" in the title, Nagel's name is shown, and there are several erasures of town names and one mining district - Agusta Dist (just below the "V" and "A" of Nevada) had been erased as well. The Humboldt River has also been changed. It is not clear if our issue is earlier or later than the Wheat 1071. In stamped red cloth covers 16x11 with an ad for Maps, etc. on the inside cover, Adrien Gensoul's name pasted over Holt's name. Front cover stamped with "Map Of California And Nevada" in gilt. With four pages of routes and distances. This is a superb map, full of interesting and exotic information in Nevada and California. Scale (ca. 1:1,750,000) not 24 miles to an in. as stated on map. |

This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map.
