Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color. |

Shows entire Florida Peninsula. See Stephenson page 15 for a general discussion of Bachmann's civil war views. In addition to the six panoramas of the seat of war, Bachmann did a view of Richmond (Stephenson 621, illustrated p271), and of the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers (Stephenson 1.5) - which may be similar to the Kentucky - Tennessee Seat of War view, at least in terms of vantage point. Full color. Bound in black leather covers 38x30 with "Florida & Part Of Georgia & Alabama. G.G.W." stamped in gold. |

Another issue of 1862 has a strange note regarding the Burnett House (a hotel) in Cincinnati. "This is the only map used to plan campaigns in Virginia by Gen. McClellan. The brown cloth covers 19x13 (with tie remnants) are titled in gold "Lloyd's $100,000 Topographical Map of Virginia. Used by the War Department." A promotional broadside was put out early in 1861 announcing the first issue of this map and calling it "the only real good map ever made in America" (see our copy with "Lloyd's Map of the Southern States" - Newspaper format). Full color by county. Map is mounted on linen and undissected. Covers also West Virginia. |
