List No 2903.000
Note One issue of 8 issues (Ristow). This issue has inset maps and business directories of Philadelphia, Germantown, Frankford, Bridesburg plus five small towns (all at the top), and Manayunk, Falls of Schuykill, Hestonville, Paschallville, Tacony and Holmesburg at the bottom. Other issues of the map have Philadelphia and Trenton and Philadelphia and Camden in the titles. Lake and Beers may have done eight issues to cover different parts of the local market, much in the manner of Beers' six different issues of his Atlas of New York and Vicinity of 1867-8. The date of 1860 on the map has been changed to 1869 by someone drawing the "9" in place of the "0" which probably had rubbed off - the artist thought incorrectly that the date was 1869 (unless there was an unrecorded later issue and it really was a "9"). Full color map, dissected into 36 sections, and backed and bordered in linen. Folds into blue marbled end sheets 31x28, and is layed into a new green cloth folding case with "Vicinity Of Philadelphia Lake And Beers 1869" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note 1st edition, shows all of Staten Island. This edition extends further south than the 1863 issue of "New-York and Its Vicinity" that we have (although Haskell lists an 1863 edition that is the same coverage as this edition - #1121) but it does not extend as far north (it extends 19 miles north and 15 miles south, shown with circles). Walling seems to have published two variants of this map to meet the demands of two markets - similar to Beers' "Philadelphia and Vicinity" map of the same period. Much land ownership information is shown outside of Manhattan Island. Full color by county, dissected into 36 sections.

List No 3127A
Note 1st edition. 2nd edition was1865, another edition in 1869 (Karrow 1-1683). German edition published in 1864. (Karrow 1-1655). Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. We can find no earlier edition of this map, so the "Revised Edition" is puzzling. Lubrecht lists three foreign publishers for this map: Bacon in London, Volkmar in Leipsic, and Lubrecht & Co. in Stuttgart. An edition in German is described in Karrow. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. Gurnsey (see our copy, WH's copy, and Heaston Cat. 19 for a reproduction). The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folded into black paper covered boards 24.5x21 with "The American Continent" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

List No 1213.000
Note Related to Williams' New Nat. Map for Mitchell. Compare to 1857 and 1860 Mitchell New National Map exhibiting the United States... We assume that this Williams is the son of Wellington Williams and that he took over his father's map and reissued it. It is interesting to see that John M. Atwood published this map - it appears that he not only published maps, but also drew them for others, i.e. Colton and Ensign & Thayer. Inset maps include: Island Of Newfoundland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut, The Atlantic Ocean Showing The Communications By Cable And Steam Between Europe And The United States, Is. Of Porto Rico, Virgin Is. And S. Cruz, Islands Of Japan ..., Map Of The Great Pacific Ocean With It's Shores And Islands, Alaska, and The Sandwich Islands Or Hawaiian Group. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 36 sections and folds into a new green cloth folding case 29x29 with "United States, Canada, Mexico &c. G.W. Williams 1876" stamped in gilt on the spine. Authors Dozy, Dr. G. J., Elsevier
Full Title De Elsevier - Globe Naar De Nieuwste Bronner Bewerkt Onder Toezight Van Dr. G. J. Dozy, Gratis - Premie Het Boek Der Reizen En Ontdekkingen Rotterdam. Uitgevers - Maatschappij "Elsevier."
List No 2854.000
Note Collapsible globe with case. See Map Collector #33, p28-29, an article by van der Krogt on this very globe. This was a "Gratis - Premie" or a gift to accompany the book of journeys and discoveries by Jules Verne, adapted for Dutch readers by Dozy, and published by Elsevier. The wooden case has "De Elsevier Globe" printed on the sides and top. Not in Lanman's "Folding or Collapsible Terrestrial Globes." The title translates "The Elsevier Globe, adapted from the latest sources under supervision of Dr. G.J. Dozy. Presented free with the Book of Expeditions and Discoveries..." This form of globe was inspired by Betts' New Portable Globe (an umbrella type globe) published in London beginning in about 1860 and continuing into the twentieth century (van der Krogt). The similarity between this globe and the Betts globe of the same period is such that one might believe that Betts made this globe under contract with Elsevier (see Dekker and van der Krogt "Globes from the Western World" p127).
