Smyth was the first Surveyor General of Canada and in 1799 wrote "A Short Topographical Description of His Majesty's Province of Upper Canada, In North America" which was sold with the map. This map is the first edition of the "Smyth Series" which went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). See our 1818 and the Wyld 1838 for later versions. See Sabin 85205 for more on Smyth and the map. Map has outline color by hand, is dissected into 16 sections and mounted on linen. 1st edition of the first geological map of U.S. A portion of a map of the U.S. by Samuel Lewis is used to make this map. The full sheet of paper was put on a larger plate and pulled, leaving the upper and right side without borders, as issued. Uncut and untrimmed, the map appears here with Maclure's original essay on the geology of the U.S. In 1817 Maclure published an expanded versus of his essay, using the small Melish Map of the U.S. as a base. Maclure was dissatisfied with the Lewis map because of its rendering of the mountains, and an errata slip is attached to the back of p 423 explaining this (and stating that originally it was intended to use a reduction of the Bradley U.S. map). See Marcou 1858 for more discussion of the Lewis map. Maclure did a Paris printing of the article and Map (using a map by Volney as a base) in 1811, in French. The Lewis map is most likely the Map of the U.S. published in the 2nd edition of Carey's American Atlas, 1809 (P-Maps p 876,Walsh). Maclure's map and essay are very rare. There is an inscription on the title page to "Mons. F.A. Michaux-Paris, from his friend..." Map bound into the back of paper covered boards with the title handwritten on the spine. Map in full color by geologic structure. |

This is an unusual survivor - in about 1854 someone cut out the Northwestern one third of John Melish's large Map of the United States (1823 edition) and updated it to show the states, territories and proposed territories of that period, notably Kansas and Nebraska but no Gadsden Purchase, and Shoshone and Dakota (which are usually seen on circa 1858-59 maps). The new boundaries are hand colored with white past down labels for names of states and territories. It might have been used as a school map in the west - we found it in a small town in the California gold country. This portion is dissected into 15 sections mounted on linen with silk edging, and folds down to 23x15. |

First edition. This is a very good map of the state for its period, showing all the town boundaries in the counties, and a lovely "View of Cincinnati" below the title. It is larger than most of the other contemporary pocket maps (Burr, Reed, Mitchell, Tanner) and has better detail. This first edition is not in any references. Stream of Time maps were popular in the second half of the 19th century (see our 1858 Tableau De L'Histoire Universelle by Pick) and later, but this map or diagram by Colton is an early example, at least in the United States. The period covered starts with the Creation in 4004 BC and extends down to 1842. The bottom of the map has an Explanation which states that "Each Nation is represented by a stream which is broken in upon or flows on undisturbed as it is influenced by the accession of Territory or the remaining at Peace." This is taken from Tanner's Map of the United States of Mexico, with the addition of the California Gold Regions colored in yellow, and an added inset map of "United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Routes from N. York to St. Francisco by Land & Water." The map has been updated to show Fremont's route across the Great Basin and the "Boundary of 1848" with Mexico. The 14x9 cover entitled "Tanner's Travelling Map of California & c has on the inside front a "Table of Routes from New-York to California, with the Modes of Conveyance, Distances, Time and Fares." This is a very late map for Tanner, still printed from engraved plates (although the impression looks a bit tired), in the next to last year of his publishing career. He died in Brooklyn in 1858. |

| Note |
In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Full color by county, folded into stamped black leather covers 15x9 with "Colton & Co.s. Map Of Illinois Exhibiting The Sections By Peck & Messinger" in gilt. Prime meridian: Washington. |

Wheat: "This map, a beautiful example of the cartographer's art, is unfortunately rare and little-known...it was by far the most accurate and complete map of California and of its gold regions which had as yet been published." This copy was issued as a wall map, but it has been nicely restored, varnish removed, rebacked on paper without the rollers. The other examples I am aware of were all pocket maps. Probably the best and most detailed military map of Texas issued before the Civil War - rivers, roads, explorer's routes, water holes, forts and towns are shown. Includes "List of authorities." The Warren map of 1857 (see our #4013) incorporates much of this information, with even more information from this map appearing on the Warren map of 1858 (see our #2750). A later version of this map appeared in the Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (see our #1780) as plate 54. Martin and Martin incorrectly state that the map was not published until it appeared in the "Atlas to Accompany..." This is the only government map published by H.F. Walling that we know of. This copy came from a group of about ten copies found with the J.D. Graham papers. Without color. Scarce. Relief shown by hachures. |

2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen. |

Views, shows Plantations by type, very scarce. In full color, lacks original covers. See our reproduction copy issued by Pelican Press, originally in 1931, and printed by Rand McNally - this reproduction greatly alters the original. Ritzlin catalogue: "Persac was a well known surveyor and landscape painter... the map is quite scarce and normally in poor condition because most copies were used by river pilots to locate plantation landings. Few copies are known in contemporary boards. NUC lists only three copies ... however several copies are located in the south, including one which the Louisiana Supreme Court still uses in land ownership cases." Incredible detail, showing the Plantations on both sides of the river. Four engraved views. Engraved by J.H. Colton. Lacking boards, this copy has some tears at the folds with slight loss at some intersections, some light browning in two areas, but is overall a very good copy. Copies at LSU, Historic New Orleans Collection (504-523-4662). See Antiques Magazine, Nov. 1991 for Persac Article. Norman also published "Norman's New Orleans and Environs" with a map of the city, in 1845 (see our copy). |

The first great atlas of Mexico, produced by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Sabin says only 300 copies were printed. The maps are of each province, with each surrounded by text. Phillips lists two later editions of 1886 with somewhat different titles. The only atlas of Mexico listed by Phillips that is earlier than this atlas is Humboldt's Atlas...de la Nouvelle Espagne of 1811. Has two very interesting plates at the end that relate to Aztec writing. Garcia Cubas was 26 when he published this. Strangely, then, the verso of the title page has 1846 as the copyright date (when the author was 14?). Maps hand col. with outline color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with title embossed in gold on the spine reading "Garcia y Cubas. Atlas geografico de la Republica Mexicana." |
