Note	Smyth was the first Surveyor General of Canada and in 1799 wrote "A Short Topographical Description of His Majesty's Province of Upper Canada, In North America" which was sold with the map. This map is the first edition of the "Smyth Series" which went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). See our 1818 and the Wyld 1838 for later versions. See Sabin 85205 for more on Smyth and the map. Map has outline color by hand, is dissected into 16 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new gray cloth folding case 23.5x16 with "Upper Canada D.W. Smyth 1800" stamped in gold on the spine. Relief shown by hachures.

Note	First edition. Large, four sectioned map in original case, each sheet is dissected into 16 sections). Ten inset maps. Editions to 1850. A large, impressive map, with a unique title indicating Purdy's attempt to create a new name for the region discovered by Cabot, and/or an attempt by Laurie and Whittle to sell more maps (see Fredonia map of 1833). The main organizing feature of the map is the drainage of the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. The inset maps are very detailed and several notes discuss Cabot's explorations. Tanner mentions this map as a source in his preface to the American Atlas, as does Melish in his Geographical Description of the United States. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1814, 1821, and 1821/25, Winearls adds editions of 1828 (May), 1828 (June), 1838, and 1850. With outline color. Folds into original marbled cardboard slip case 21x16.5 with a label reading "Cabotia. Jo Gratz" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen, 32 Dame Strt." printed in ink.

Note	The first edition, listed in Phillips but not by Stevens and Tree or Wheat (both list 1824/25 as the first edition). A large impressive map showing with great accuracy the recent discoveries in the north west passage, but wildly off in the American southwest - Wheat: "a large and beautiful map, excellent in all respects save for its southwestern geography." In the southwest, Wyld adds many mountain ranges that were purely speculative - probably just to fill in blank spaces in the map (unlike Arrowsmith). In northwestern Texas is a curious note on the topography of the area attributed to "Mellish" which is copied from a pre-1822 edition of his large map of the United States. Comparing this edition to the derived map of 1846, "Mexico, the British Possessions...," one sees many changes in the northern areas and few in the southwest. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1824, 1827/8, 1838, and 1851/56. The 1824/25 edition adds a fold out flap of Mexico and Central America (WH copy). With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into a brown marbled paper covered slip case with black leather spine with "Map Of North America" stamped in gilt.

Note	The first edition. With inset maps of fourteen cities, South Florida, Oregon and the Mandan Districts (with a chart of the Outlet of Oregon River), two Statistical tables, and fourteen profiles of portages, canals and railroads. With Tanner's "Memoir...Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." This was one of the most popular general maps of the eastern United States and went through several editions (Phillips, Karrow, Yale, and Howes show editions of 1829, 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1843, and 1850). Distances on all major roads are shown between towns, an effort that Tanner states in the Memoir caused the map to take twice as long to produce. Latitude is measured from Washington, D.C., making this a truly "American" map. Although Tanner states that "The new map of the United States is founded on, and embraces generally, the valuable and original information, contained in our American Atlas," the general form of the map bears a striking resemblance to J.&A. Walker's Map of the United States published in London in 1827, a fact that Tanner does not mention. Howes (T23) shows "An Alphabetical Index to the four sheet map of the United States," also to accompany editions of the map. This is one of best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period, without equal until Mitchell produced the first edition of his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in 1834. Kept in a half leather case with ties to keep it closed. Measuring 23x18, it has "Tanner's United States" embossed on the red leather spine.

Note	Haskell shows editions of 1824, 1826, 1828/29, 1833, 1838, and 1842. Compared to the 1828/29 edition, the listing of churches and public buildings has been expanded and the map shows new development in the northern parts of the city. For some unexplained reason, Hooker has dropped the appellation "Hydrographer" and is now just "Engraver." Map is folded into red leather covers 12x7.5 with "Hooker's Plan of New York" stamped in gilt.

Note	The non American maps may be partly derived from the Dower/Teesdale General Atlas of 1831 - see P3549 & P772. North America map has states in different colors and has the following differences from the 1843 Atlas copy: San Felipe de Austin (as opposed to San Felipe in the 1843), and Sioux and Wisconsin Dists (not in the 1843 edition). Wheat mistakenly uses a post 1836 issue as an illustration in Trans Miss and calls it 1836. The Mexico map has differences from 1843 issue: Houston appears in 1843 and not in 1836, and San Felipe de Austin in 1836 is San Felipe in 1843. The Michigan map changes substantially between the 1836, the 1842, and the 1843 editions, especially the shoreline. See notes to the (1838) edition which also has a title page dated 1836. Bound in half leather, marbled paper covered boards, with "Tanner's Universal Atlas. 1836." stamped in gilt along the spine. Full color.
