I have no clue what this building used to be. As with much of 20th Century New Orleans archictecture, nobody seems very interested. The 8-story logo S and the skewed aluminum three-tone grid are spectacular. I hope the damage will be repaired, but given the building's vintage, I'm not optimistic.
Together with the nearby Streamline Deco Walgreen's and Gus Mayer Co. buildings, the lacy building, the Egyptian Deco Mangel's, and a wide assortment of neon signs, these blocks hold a remarkable collection of mid-20th Century design styles.

A 1960s-style metal screen on Canal Street. I've never seen another building like it.
Comparing my Nov. 2004 photos of the same building, most of the damage appears to be from the hurricanes. A store sign (not quite legible before -- possibly "Mirage") has also vanished.
Canal Street is in the lower left. Midway up Canal is the huge neoclassical portal of the Southern Railway Station, its rail lines exiting its rear along the center of Basin Street. Just beyond the long sheds where the trains stopped is Storyville, now the site of the Iberville Housing Project. (See description under image 5 below.)

Canal_Street_Moderne_(DEMOLISHED)
Description
I captured this image in December of 2007. I rarely drive up Canal Street, and had not noticed this building before. On Saturday 1.19.08, I was back on Canal Street for the AIA / Design Within Reach Modern Architecture bus tour. As we approached the site, I was shocked to see the building had since been reduced to rubble. It WAS on the uptown lakeside corner of Canal and Treme / S. Liberty.
"In addition, Louisiana State University (LSU) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have a planned development for a new teaching-hospital and medical-research complex that will be located across the street from 2001 Canal Street Condominiums."
