Note
This is the second edition of this important map, dated 1755 but published in 1757, according to the British Museum. The only change from the first issue is the addition of several panels of interesting text in ocean. The original eight printed sheets of the map are here assembled in two large panels (each with four sheets) each dissected into 36 sections and mounted on linen. Uncolored, as issued. In the sixth line of the first column of the text this issue is referred to as the Second Edition One of the most important maps in American history, it went through five editions (see Stevens). We believe this second edition is scarcer than the other editions as it appears less often on the market. Compare to the first French edition of 1856 (our copy) regarding the conflicting claims of the British and French to American territory.

4th edition, corrected to 1812, but dated 1804. This map was originally issued in 1804. This copy is dated 1804 but is corrected for political and topographical changes to 1812. It shows Louisiana and Missouri Territory, both of which were established in 1812. There has been extensive redrawing of the Mississippi River from the junction of the Ohio north to the Wyaconda River (probably due to the public surveys in southern Illinois, evidenced by the appearance of Township and Range lines there). Numerous other changes from the 1804 edition have been made throughout the map adding new counties, towns, roads, and changed physical features, primarily in the mid and western portions. So far I have been able to identify 1804, 1806, 1809, and 1812 editions, but it is likely that other editions will be discovered. The dates are estimates based on the political changes on the maps - all editions are dated 1804 on the title. Since it was a postal map and needed to be current as to towns, road and counties, it is probable that the map was updated every few years, until a new plate was made in 1819 by Harrison (Karpinski 59, Karrow 1-1466). The 1796 edition of this map (a different engraving) was changed four times in as many years (Wheat & Brun 127-130). The 1819 edition became the official post office map in 1825, used until 1829 (Ristow). All of the 1804 to 1812 editions were originally engraved by Francis Shallus of Philadelphia. With outline color. This copy in original condition, dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen, in original quarter leather marbled covers 27x20 with ties (remnants now) and title "Bradley's U. States" stamped in gild on the spine.

This is the fourth edition of the 1834 Brue map showing Jedidiah Smith's routes in the west. Although Picquet says this 1839 edition is augmented from the 1834, I can find no changes between the two. Wheat calls the 1834 edition "one of the foundation stones of western mapping history." Jedidiah Smith's geography in the Great Basin and California is shown, based on a letter of Smith describing his journeys published in the Nouvelles Annales de Voyages, Paris 1828 (Wheat). Two insets show the environs of Mexico City and Vera Cruz, and the Yucatan. Texas is still shown as a part of Mexico. Under the title Picquet has added his name as publisher; Picquet acquired all Brue's maps from his widow in 1835. There was a second edition in 1835, and a third in 1837. Wheat does not mention this fourth edition. Map is hand painted in outline color, dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into loose marbled paper wrappers and then into a marbled paper covered slip case with a red label stamped with "Mexique" in gilt.

Note
The third edition (although I can detect no changes from the first issue of 1830). Has the note in the lower left explaining the origin of the term of Fredonia. This map is the only one I have seen that copies almost literally three earlier maps: Lewis and Clark (1814), Long (1822), and Arrowsmith's Mexico (1820). Laurie used the term Fredonia, we may assume, to create a novelty of his map, in the same manner as his "Cabotia" map of 1814. Has the original case with label, and an advertisement for Crunchley's publications on the verso of the map. W. Heckrotte has another edition dated 1834 improved to 1836 (with changes in California based on John Arrowsmith's Map of British North America, 1834), and the second edition of 1832. The western topography is changed to incorporate Arrowsmith's map of 1834 (British North America) and an independent Texas is shown. Editions seen of 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1849. It appears that the map was updated frequently in order to keep it current. It is an excellent and beautiful map.

With insets of the West Indies and a Statistical Table. This map has the distinction of being the first large scale detailed map made in the U.S. that showed the entire country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This copy is an early state of the first edition -this is Martin's third state of the first edition and Ristow's fourth state (Ristow discovered a town and trail added in Ohio - Adelphi - making for a sub state of Martin's third state). The first state was an incomplete proof copy, making this the second/third state of the completed copy. The differences between this and the first complete state are small: Mansfield, Wooster, and Adelphi (and a trail from Adelphi to Athens and Chillicothe) added in Ohio, and "Vevay or" added before "Swiss Vineyards" in southeastern Indiana. Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the 1816 edition. Melish published new editions in 1818 (five states), 1819 (two states), 1820 (eight states), 1822 (two states), and 1823 (one state) for a total of twenty five different issues. Notwithstanding the many issues, the map has become extremely rare. A book accompanied the map (though issued separately) titled "A Geographical Description of the United States..." (see our #2424). Outline color by state or territory. This copy is dissected into 40 sections, backed with linen, and edged in brown cloth. It folds with marbled end sheets into new blue cloth folding boards and slip case 24.5x16.5 with leather label on spine reading "Melish. Map Of The United States. 1816" in gold.

Note
This may be the earliest chart to depict the heights of mountains and the lengths of rivers together in one illustration, with the rivers hanging down over the mountains. Wolter says that Bulla's Tableau Comparatif of 1826 is the earliest of the combined mountain and river type, but he had not seen this chart by Gardner done three years earlier and does not list it. This chart is beautifully done and, while not large in size, it is impressive in its scope. Full color. Map is mounted on linen, dissected into 8 sections with an end sheet label reading "The Most Approved Modern Maps, Plans, And Charts, Of every Description, From The Best Authorities, Constantly on Sale at William Darton's Map, Print, and Chart Warehouse, 58, Holborn Hill, London..." Map folds into a dark green marbled cardboard case with a turquoise paper label printed with the map title (as above); there is a "William Darton's, Map seller" bookplate label on the back of the case.

First edition. Very large map of North America with nine inset maps of important cities. This map contains and is the basis of all the maps that appear in the Rogers and Johnston Atlas of the United States of North America, published in the same year. It is a stunning map, very detailed in the west; Wheat did not see this map, but did comment on two of the western maps in the Atlas - "This map is...notable for its clarity, though it is equally notable for the amount of information it contains. W and A.K. Johnston, of Edinburgh, were engravers who well understood their art, and their maps are outstanding." The Proposed Pacific Railway routes are shown. This map compares favorably to the large Colton and Mitchell U.S. maps of the same date (which are also on the same scale) and generally it is more accurate. Scarce, with only the later 1861 edition (title slightly changed - "Map of the United States and Mexico, with Canada...") in Karrow. This first edition is not in any references. A later edition, 1859, was issued with geological coloring (HR 13-123). The map case has Stanford's name at the bottom of the spine, indicating that he sold the map (and perhaps printed it as he did the Atlas). See also the 1861 U.S. only edition (#5405) and the full 1869 edition (#5402).

This is the first edition of the "Washington" map, so called because it used a large oval portrait of George Washington in the map's title cartouche. Later editions were published by Phelps (altered), and Thrall (identical). A portion of the main map was used by Huntington in Darby's Gazetteer (see our #2067). Oval portrait of Washington, inset maps of North America, Boston, Washington, New York; view of "The Capital at Washington." Table of distances occupies the Great Basin. Has the famous legend in the Missouri Territory: "Missouri Territory is a vast wilderness consisting chiefly of immense plains, almost destitute of wood, except in the neighborhood of streams. It is traversed by numerous herds of Buffalo & wild Horses, and by a few roving tribes of Indians." This map is also the precursor to the United States maps that appeared in Olney's School Geography, also published in Hartford. With black top and bottom rollers and green silk edging. Full color by state or territory.

Note
This map is among the most detailed and largest scale maps of Yosemite issued during this part of the 19th century, rivaled only by the Wheeler Survey map of Yosemite published in 1883. This is a second issue of this map, here mounted as a wall map. This is the same as the first issue that appeared with the Yosemite Guide Book (see our #4212) except that it adds "Hite's Cove" on the Merced River just slightly west of its junction with Devil's Gulch. In the (1870) third issue (our #4650) Hite's Cove is relocated to a point just south of the Merced on the road titled "Road to Hite's Cove" and the erasure of the prior label is apparent. We have dated this second issue (1869) as a best guess. With black top and bottom rollers, and pink linen edging. Map is without color.

Note
This map was published separately and at the same time as Hutchins' "Topographical Description..." and should accompany the book. Streeter calls it "by far the best map of the west printed to that time." It was the first large scale map of the area west of the Allegheny Mountains based on personal observations, although Hutchins gives credit to Lewis Evans' "Map of the Middle Colonies" as the best prior source of information about the area. The map contains extensive printed notes which describe important aspects of the country depicted. This map ranks with the most important American maps issued in the 18th century and is now rare. Hutchins later became the first Geographer of the United States. With outline color. Map is dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into new green cloth folding boards and quarter leather green cloth slip case 24x16 with "Hutchin's New Map Of Western Parts Of Virginia, Etc. 1778" on the spine in gold.

1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color; dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine.

1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt.

This issue incorporates the Lewis and Clark discoveries (and other discoveries) and remaps the entire continent west of the Mississippi. The changes between this and the last edition (1811) are monumental. This copy is from the collection of Sir Charles Broke (or Brooke, subsequently Vere). Broke was in Lower Canada with his regiment, the 5th (Northumberland) Regiment of Foot, which was at the battle of Plattsburg in 1814. Later, he was with the Army of Occupation in France, receiving the Waterloo medal despite arriving from Canada too late for the battle (from Manasek). Without color. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new gray cloth covered box case 29x22x7 with "North America A. Arrowsmith 1814" stamped on the spine in gold.

Watermark, J. Whatman 1811, NE sheet, lower left. Comparing to 79(d), 1804, I cannot find the changes indicated by Stevens, and comparing to 79(f), which only has added "-1815" in ms, I cannot find any changes either. It could be that this copy of 79(e) is later than the one Stevens saw as indicated by the 1811 watermark. There may be a 79(e) without the 1811 watermakr that is earlier. Outline color by state. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 18 sections. Sheets fold, each with a label pasted to the linen backing reading "Sold by W. Faden, Geographer to His Majesty and to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. No. 5 Charing Cross." The four map sheets lie folded between two brown card end sheets, inside their original marbled paper slip case 22x13.5 with the same paste down label.

The last edition of Melish's map of the United States, first published in 1816, and the 25th state identified by Martin/Ristow. This edition has the three additional sheets at the bottom of the map (added in the second state of the 1822 edition) that expand the coverage of Mexico and the West Indies. Compared to the first 1816 edition, there are many changes in the Great Plains area of the U.S. (that first appeared in the 1822 edition) based on Long's Map of 1822 (although Melish does not mention Long in his preface to the Geographical Description edition of 1822). Ristow (A la Carte) says there are no changes between between the 1823 edition and the second state of the 1822 edition, other than the change in publisher and date. Outline color by state or territory. The map is dissected into 50 sections, backed with linen, and edged in white silk. It folds into a new dark blue cloth folding case 25x17 with black ties; the spine is embossed with "Map Of The United States. John Melish. 1823" in gold.
