Note
The first edition, first state (see our first edition, second state for comparison, #444) of Lucas' best general atlas and the finest general atlas produced in the U.S. at the time (In asserting this we omit the Tanner and Finley American Atlases of 1823 and 1826 respectively because they were not general atlases - cartographically they may have been superior to the Lucas, but not as broad in coverage). The quality of the engraving (most of the U.S. maps were engraved by B.T. Welch, others by Young & Delker, J.V.N. Throop, Cone & Freeman, and Kneass) is superb, the detail is very fine, and the coloring is delicate and elegant. While the same Lucas drawn base maps were used iin this atlas and the 1822 American Atlas by Carey and Lea (and thereby created strained relations between him and Carey and Lea), the maps in this Lucas Atlas are far superior in quality - Welch reengraved many of the maps for Lucas that Young & Delker had engraved for Carey and Lea. It is interesting to note that the Carey and Lea maps are usually earlier states of the Lucas maps. The Atlantic Islands and the West Indies Island Maps are mostly copied from Thomson's General Atlas of 1817 (see our copy, #1007) as is the Mountains and Rivers plate (reduced). Many maps are derived from the earlier Lucas Atlas of 1815-17 which copied the Oddy Atlas maps for the non U.S. state maps. Some copies have solid color. Maps of Mexico, Canada, and N. America (updated by Lucas in the Arctic), are copied from Arrowsmith's "General Atlas" of 1823 (first ed. was 1817). The classical maps derive from Melish's "Atlas of Ancient Geography" of 1815. Half leather with marbled paper covered boards, thick outline color, title on spine - "Lucas Cabinet Atlas."

Note
First atlas of America printed in America. First edition. These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's improved." The maps were again used for the 1796 edition of Carey's General Atlas, unchanged except for the Tennessee map, which is titled "Tennassee State" instead of "Tennassee Government" which is the title in both the American Atlas and the Guthrie Atlas - see Wheat and Brun, and has several counties delineated in the eastern part of the state which do not show in the 1795 edition of the map. NMM 480 (American Atlas) has "Tennassee State" indicating that Carey was not consistent. This atlas was the model for John Reid's American Atlas of 1796. This copy's maps have very strong impressions. Rebound quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards.

Note
The non American maps may be partly derived from the Dower/Teesdale General Atlas of 1831 - see P3549 & P772. North America map has states in different colors and has the following differences from the 1843 Atlas copy: San Felipe de Austin (as opposed to San Felipe in the 1843), and Sioux and Wisconsin Dists (not in the 1843 edition). Wheat mistakenly uses a post 1836 issue as an illustration in Trans Miss and calls it 1836. The Mexico map has differences from 1843 issue: Houston appears in 1843 and not in 1836, and San Felipe de Austin in 1836 is San Felipe in 1843. The Michigan map changes substantially between the 1836, the 1842, and the 1843 editions, especially the shoreline. See notes to the (1838) edition which also has a title page dated 1836. Bound in half leather, marbled paper covered boards, with "Tanner's Universal Atlas. 1836." stamped in gilt along the spine. Full color.

Note
The first atlas made in the United States to employ standard color on the maps; while the Carey 1795 American Atlas and the Carey 1811 General Atlas list color as an option on the title page, we have never seen any copies of a pre 1814 Carey atlas with original color - they may exist, but would be rare - color was first employed as standard in this 1814 edition - all copies that we have seen have been colored. This edition is almost entirely new, with most of the maps reengraved. The 1804 edition before this was essentially the same as the 1795 first edition. The preface is dated March 17th, 1814. This edition should probably be called the second edition even though Carey does not label it as such, because Carey calls the 1818 edition the third edition. The Map of the United States is an updated copy of the U.S. map engraved by Henry Tanner that appeared in the first edition of Melish's Travels In the United States, published in 1812. This issue is late 1814. See our early 1814 for differences. Bound in quarter leather, brown paper covered boards.

Note
In addition to a two volume Italian translation of Raynal's History of North America, this book contains the first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton, and La Baja D' Hudson. All of these maps appeared also in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published from 1779-1785. A second edition of the Zatta/Mitchell maps was published in 1791 (see P651). Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact or complete copy: the Zatta maps do not cover the far western portions of Mitchell's map, many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica., neither of which are shown by Mitchell. A separate map covers Newfoundland and Cape Breton, on the same scale. Maps are hand painted with outline color. Covers are quarter leather light brown marbled paper covered boards with "Raynal. Storia Dell' America Settentrionale. 1778" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine.

The Spanish "Vancouver." Atlas volume only, first edition. Sometimes attributed to Dionisio Alcala Galiano. The title of the text volume is "Relacion del Viage Hecho por las Goletas Sutil y Mexicana en al ano 1792 para reconocer el estrecho de Fuca..." The last and very important voyage up the Pacific coast to be undertaken by Spain is detailed in the nine maps and eight plates of the atlas. Galiano and Cayetano Valdes led the expedition, arriving in the northwest at the same time as Vancouver. Although the maps were published four years after the Vancouver maps, Wagner considers them in many respects to be superior, and Humboldt used them in his Essai Politique sur le Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne. Wagner further states: "The general impression today...is that the English discoveries of Vancouver were published four years before those of the Spaniards. This...is a misapprehension... The principal reason, however, why the nomenclature and geography of Vancouver came to occupy the field was that his maps were extensively copied by the famous English cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith, and later by the English Admiralty."

1st Edition; Fielding Lucas engraved most of the maps. The 1823 edition was unchanged in most copies, a few have minor map updates, and one (see our copy) has all of the 1827 edition maps while still retaining the 1823 title page and most of the text. The 1827 edition includes much new material, with all the maps and text updated, except for the Washington, D.C., and Michigan maps. A French edition by Buchon was published in 1825, an abridged London edition in 1823 (see our copies), and a German edition by C.F. Weiland in 1824-1828 (P1225, Espenhorst 1.6.3). This was the first American Atlas that was modeled on Le Sage's plan of having explanatory text surrounding the maps. The maps are beautifully drawn and colored. Lucas went on to publish his own General Atlas in 1823, using similar maps but without the text. Rebound into half leather tan paper covered boards with "American Atlas. 1822." stamped in gilt along the spine.

Note
1st edition of the first geological map of U.S. A portion of a map of the U.S. by Samuel Lewis is used to make this map. The full sheet of paper was put on a larger plate and pulled, leaving the upper and right side without borders, as issued. Uncut and untrimmed, the map appears here with Maclure's original essay on the geology of the U.S. In 1817 Maclure published an expanded versus of his essay, using the small Melish Map of the U.S. as a base. Maclure was dissatisfied with the Lewis map because of its rendering of the mountains, and an errata slip is attached to the back of p 423 explaining this (and stating that originally it was intended to use a reduction of the Bradley U.S. map). See Marcou 1858 for more discussion of the Lewis map. Maclure did a Paris printing of the article and Map (using a map by Volney as a base) in 1811, in French. The Lewis map is most likely the Map of the U.S. published in the 2nd edition of Carey's American Atlas, 1809 (P-Maps p 876,Walsh). Maclure's map and essay are very rare. There is an inscription on the title page to "Mons. F.A. Michaux-Paris, from his friend..." Map bound into the back of paper covered boards with the title handwritten on the spine. Map in full color by geologic structure.

Note
Clark II-41. Third and best edition. Streeter: "The most complete version of this work, in which form it was the most informative compilation on the West at the end of the 18th century." Complete text of Filson's Kentucky, Hutchins on Florida, etc., and much else. The Map of the State of Kentucky, by Elihu Barker is a slight reduction in size from the original by Carey, but not as great a reduction as the edition of the map that appeared in Carey's American Atlas and General Atlas in 1795 (cf Wheat & Brun 641, 642). The London version of the Barker map seems to have the same information as the Philadelphia, but they are very different in engraving style with the Philadelphia copy having an "American" look. Clark is critical of the accuracy of Imlay's letters, which were probably written in Europe after he fled Kentucky and financial problems. See DAB for another critical view of Mr. Imlay.

1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title page is dated 1817 and the text is unchanged from the 1817 edition, but the Melish base map is changed from the 1817 edition Melish map to one that shows all of Florida and Missouri and Arkansas (with Arkansas in an 1828 formation). The map is the second state (White 1817B), although it is really an entirely different map. It is similar to the Map of The United States that appears in Melish's Traveler's Guide of 1822 and in Carey and Lea's American Atlas, but it has been reengraved, and the title is changed to United States of North America. It is colored geologically, but there is no color key. The same map appears in the Jackson Wreath of 1829, but in an earlier state. Bound in at the back is the "Essay..." mentioned above. This copy belonged to Francis P. Farquhar, noted California historian. Bound in brown cloth covers with "Geology" printed in gold on the spine.

Note
According to Phillips, Joseph Churchman authored the text and James Churchman (brother?) authored the map. The map, 42x53, is most extraordinary and rare: it shows an eagle superimposed in engraving and color on a map of the United States, with the talons in Florida, the eye in Vermont, and the wings spreading west to the Missouri Territory. It is beautifully done. Pages 244-48 of the text explain the construction of the Eagle map; it is also stated here that the author intended to publish a larger version of the map by subscription. I have found no record of such a map being published. Book covered with blue cloth with "Rudiments of National Knowledge" on spine.

Apparently the atlas was only available by subscription in 1854, 55, 56, and part of 57. The list ends in 1857, perhaps indicating that the marketing changed, or that Mr. French went on to other pursuits. Book bound in full red leather with "Colton's Atlas" in gilt on cover.

Note
The first edition with the earliest states of all the maps. Many believe this to be the finest atlas published in the United States in the 19th century. The text essay (included here) is a wonderful compilation of information on the contemporary maps that Tanner used as sources. Tanner updated the maps frequently over the next two decades, and issued several editions or compilations of the atlas with the title pages dated 1823 or 1825, but with some of the maps dated as late as 1833. The collation of our six issues shows that no two copies are alike and that the maps were being constantly updated; however the choice of maps for each edition reveals a somewhat haphazard approach with some of the earliest states of a particular map appearing the one of the later atlas editions. A completely revised edition was issued in 1839, with the title page and most of the maps dated 1839 (see P1382). Hand painted in outline color with a full color wash. Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Tanner's American Atlas" stamped in gilt on a front leather label.

This atlas was the first world atlas produced by Colton, after many years of issuing pocket maps, wall maps, guides, and maps for books. The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period - it had a long publishing run, continuing for over thirty years (with the title changed to Colton's General Atlas after 1856). In this issue, the Texas map is single page, 2nd state. New Mexico and Utah 2nd state.
