Wood block print. Hand colored. In Chinese with Japanese annotations in red ink. Shows the world based on Buddhist literature from India and China. This map is based on a Buddhist conceptual view of the world with India at the center, yet it includes contemporary European geographical knowledge -- Europe is shown as a group of islands in the upper left corner and South America is an island in the ocean south of Japan on the right side. The map has many place names in Asia not found on European maps of the period. In the center of the map in the Himalayan Mountains is a quadruple helix symbolizing the origins of the four great rivers of the region (the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej rivers) emanating from the heads of a horse, a lion, an elephant, and an ox. This is the site of the present day Lake Manasarovar, the highest fresh water lake in the world. "A land bridge connects China to an unnamed continent in the upper right corner ..."--Cortazzi. Relief shown pictorially. Bibliography. Title in Nihon kohan chizu shusei: Nanzenbushu bankoku shoka no zu. Folded in cover 24x19. Has annotations in red ink.

Abbot Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet (c. 1730 – 1790) was a French cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Clouet held the post of Royal Geographer of the Academie des Sciences de Rouen, he had offices in Paris and Cadiz. Clouet’s most important work is his Geographie Moderne, which was published in various editions from 1776 – 1793. Clouet also produced a series of stunning and highly decorative wall maps depicting the various continents. He followed in the footsteps of Jean-Baptiste Nolin and other French cartographers, reissuing these grand wall-maps in the latter part of the 18th century to decorate the houses of Paris and more unusually Spain.

Note
This may be the earliest chart to depict the heights of mountains and the lengths of rivers together in one illustration, with the rivers hanging down over the mountains. Wolter says that Bulla's Tableau Comparatif of 1826 is the earliest of the combined mountain and river type, but he had not seen this chart by Gardner done three years earlier and does not list it. This chart is beautifully done and, while not large in size, it is impressive in its scope. Full color. Map is mounted on linen, dissected into 8 sections with an end sheet label reading "The Most Approved Modern Maps, Plans, And Charts, Of every Description, From The Best Authorities, Constantly on Sale at William Darton's Map, Print, and Chart Warehouse, 58, Holborn Hill, London..." Map folds into a dark green marbled cardboard case with a turquoise paper label printed with the map title (as above); there is a "William Darton's, Map seller" bookplate label on the back of the case.

Considered by many to be the artistic and factual high point in the comparative mountains and rivers charts, a convention developed in the 19th century. Beautifully colored with fine graphics and art and closely corresponding statistical tables, it presents an appealing balance. Different mountain ranges in different colors. Extensive annotations on vegetation, volcanic activity, and lichen, no doubt derived from Humboldt. Of course, due to the early date, the geographical data does not reflect many later discoveries, like taller waterfalls in Yosemite or the actual length of the Nile. Shows 7000 meter high hot air balloon flight by Guy-Lussac in 1808. Mounted on heavy linen. Sheet 48 in disbound atlas.

A rare advertisement for Jefferys' publications and products. The date is estimated. It is interesting that this does not emphasize the maps as much as the prints, reflecting the fact that he had a large business at this time as a general engraver. Apparently, he published this trade card to "mark his arrival in the Strand" (Harley, Imago Mundi XX), and to announce the opening of his new premises there. Card uncolored.

Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W."; the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color.

The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period - it had a long publishing run, continuing for over thirty years (with the title changed to Colton's General Atlas after 1856). Note
1st ed. Stevenson identifies 3 issues. Very beautiful and elaborate map showing the hand of Robert Pearsal Smith (has similarities graphically to his N.Y. State Map of 1860). The map is drawn by J.M. Atwood, but is credited to J.C. Smith, "Author of Harper's Gazetteer, Colton's County Map of the U.S., Traveler's Guide, &c." R.P. Smith is obviously competing with J.H. Colton by using J.C. Smith's name. Also, the population statistics for the 1860 census are listed, "in advance of official publication" (see Colton letter dated 1861 on this subject). Many inset views relating to the civil war, portraits of Union Generals, and thematic map insets. The U.S. map bears a striking resemblance to Colton's U.S. map of the same period (We suspect intentional on Smith's part) but it is different. H.H. Lloyd did a similar map in 1866 (High Ridge #18-165), probably by obtaining Smith's map copyright for this map and the New York State Map in 1865 when Smith left the map publishing business (Ristow p 377). With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county. Inset showing crops and animals of the U.S. Table of distances. Table of time differences. Profiles route of Lieut. A.W. Whipple's route for Pacific Railroad.

With red cloth covers 14.5x9 stamped with gilt title reading "Thirty Three Miles Around The City Of New-York." and a small circular map of New York (later editions omit the map on the cover). First issued in 1846, when it was reengraved by Atwood from J.H. Eddy's "Map of the Country Thirty Miles round the City of New York" which was originally issued in 1811 (see our #3472). This is one of Colton's most attractive maps, showing New York and vicinity in circular format surrounded by a vine border with views of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn. It was published in many editions for almost fifty years - our latest edition is 1891 (Haskell lists eight editions from 1846 to 1873 only). The early editions were engraved on copper plate (our 1853) and at some point before our 1865 edition the copper plate was transferred to lithographic stone and all subsequent editions were lithographed.

Note
For some reason Haskell and Stokes date this map 1864 although it was copyrighted by Viele in 1865. Removed from the Report of the Council of Hygiene (see our copy). The map shows all the original water courses of Manhattan Island, with the street grid superimposed on top. Also, three different kinds of land are shown: Marsh, Made Land, and Meadow. Sewer lines are indicated. A very beautiful full color map occasioned by a not so beautiful subject. In 1874 Viele reissued the map in larger format as the Topographical Atlas of the City of New York (see our copy). This map was also published as a separate pocket map, in covers.

Note
The date of the globes is an estimate. Paired with a three inch celestial globe. On a turned wooden stand with four black ball feet, full height from base to top, 5 inches. Warner says that Wilson changed the business name from Wilson & Co. to Wilson & Sons in 1822. The celestial globe this is paired with is by Wilson & Sons, so I assume 1822 as the only year globes were made with both business names. The globe is very well engraved, showing much detail in the continents for its small size. Longitude is given from both Washington and London. Kimball notes that David Wilson, James' son, did the engraving for a new edition of the three inch globes in the early 1820's, which I assume are these globes. David later had brief success as a miniature painter, utilizing the same delicate engraving skills which he applied to these extremely well engraved globes. The three inch globe was also sold in pocket form with the celestial sphere on the inside of the case and on a stand with horizon ring and brass meridian. On this turned wooden stand version, the globe is mounted horizontally, an unusual presentation. Wilson made the first globes in the United States, with 1810 his first year of production and 1850 (by Cyrus Lancaster) his last.
