Note	1st edition. Wheat: "This map, a beautiful example of the cartographer's art, is unfortunately rare and little-known...it was by far the most accurate and complete map of California and of its gold regions which had as yet been published." This copy was issued as a wall map, but it has been nicely restored, varnish removed, rebacked on paper without the rollers. The other examples I am aware of were all pocket maps. See Shumate essay on Goddard. A second edition, reduced in size, was published in 1858, and a third edition was published in 1860 (see WH copies). Map is unvarnished and without rollers. Outline color by county with a full color wash.

Note	Wheat calls this "rare but otherwise unimportant," due to some misspellings and inaccuracies in the map. Streeter sale illustrates the map and the price realized was the same as the Eddy map of 1853. I find the Wheat inaccuracies minor, with most of them being misspellings. The overall map is impressive. It would be interesting to find the map or maps that were used as sources. Ouline color by state. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 16.5x11 with "Map Of California And Adjacent Country By F. Goodwin" stamped in gilt.

Note	This is the thin paper copy with smaller ornamental border and no publisher credit. Wheat believes it was folded into some copies of Farnham's "Life, Adventures, and Travels in California;" our copies of that book have the Haven map pasted in one (see our #3963) and this map pasted in the other (see our #5001). This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce.

Note	This edition adds an inset map of "Harbor of Vera Cruz," and "Dates of Battles" listing seven battles of the Mexican War beginning with Palo Alto May 8, 1846 and ending with Vera Cruz, March 22 to 27, 1847. Gen Kearny's route from Ft. Leavenworth to Santa Fe is shown and labeled, along with other routes of battle (unlabeled) running from Texas south to La Puebla, Mexico. This is the last edition published by Tanner, according to Martin. It is the best edition in terms of showing the events of the Mexican War. See our 1846, third edition, #2822. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Tanner's Travelling Map of Mexico" stamped in gold. Full color.

Note	This is taken from Tanner's Map of the United States of Mexico, with the addition of the California Gold Regions colored in yellow, and an added inset map of "United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Routes from N. York to St. Francisco by Land & Water." The map has been updated to show Fremont's route across the Great Basin and the "Boundary of 1848" with Mexico. The 14x9 cover entitled "Tanner's Travelling Map of California & c has on the inside front a "Table of Routes from New-York to California, with the Modes of Conveyance, Distances, Time and Fares." This is a very late map for Tanner, still printed from engraved plates (although the impression looks a bit tired), in the next to last year of his publishing career. He died in Brooklyn in 1858.

This map covers about the same area as the David Burr map (see our #5024) but shows the boundary between Texas and Louisiana more correctly. Note	3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). Note	This is one of the most attractive of the California Gold Rush period maps. Here it is published in pocket map form, with the 16 page "Appendix to Jackson's Map..." which describes the important mining centers. More ornate and detailed than Jackson's map of 1850, this is the only map to label Santa Cruz county "Branciforte." Shows for the first time, some of the mining activity in the south, which Jackson was involved with as an engineer. Map is full color by county, folded into dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "Jackson's Map Of The Mining Districts Of California" stamped in gilt.

Note	1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine.
