Note
This is the fourth edition of the 1834 Brue map showing Jedidiah Smith's routes in the west. Although Picquet says this 1839 edition is augmented from the 1834, I can find no changes between the two. Wheat calls the 1834 edition "one of the foundation stones of western mapping history." Jedidiah Smith's geography in the Great Basin and California is shown, based on a letter of Smith describing his journeys published in the Nouvelles Annales de Voyages, Paris 1828 (Wheat). Two insets show the environs of Mexico City and Vera Cruz, and the Yucatan. Texas is still shown as a part of Mexico. Under the title Picquet has added his name as publisher; Picquet acquired all Brue's maps from his widow in 1835. There was a second edition in 1835, and a third in 1837. Wheat does not mention this fourth edition. Map is hand painted in outline color, dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into loose marbled paper wrappers and then into a marbled paper covered slip case with a red label stamped with "Mexique" in gilt.

The seventh edition known as the "Treaty Map." This map was "the official cartographic reference consulted in negotiating the peace treaty of February 2, 1848, which terminated the Mexican war..." (Martin). The first of seven issues in 1847, this is easily identifiable by having only two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico (later issues have four). The twelfth edition was also used as a treaty map. This copy folds into red cloth covers 15x10, with "Mexico" stamped in gold, and with "Statistics of the Republic of Mexico" pasted on the inside front cover. Signature of Cornelius S. Van Alstine, U.S. Navy, on verso of map. Streeter refers to this seventh edition as "the most important edition of the Disturnell map." Map is in full color.

Note
The first edition, including Mexico to the Pacific, and with the dedication to Admiral John Willett Payne. In four sheets. Countries are outlined in color. The 1810 second and later editions only extend to the east coast of Mexico, presumably because Arrowsmith published his large map of Mexico in 1810. In its coverage of Mexico and Central America, this map is the largest scale and most accurate map of those areas published to date, preceding Pike's and Humboldt's maps by several years. It seems odd that Humboldt would criticize Arrowsmith for copying his map of New Spain, when Arrowsmith produced his own map (this West Indies Map) which included substantial portions of Mexico several years before Humboldt's map was issued. There are many differences between this map's rendering of Mexico and the 1810 Map of Mexico - the later map has more and better detail, but the earlier rendition is still impressive. Stevens and Tree only list two editions, 1803 and 1810, but Phillips lists an 1811 (P-Maps) and an 1816 (atlases). There probably were others.

Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846; this map; Tehuantepec maps, 1851; Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt.

Considered to be the best book on California prior to the American occupation. Wheat calls the large map "a landmark...It made these western regions known in European official circles...his highly original map has much to commend it." Wheat neglects to mention the similarities between this map and the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America, 1837 edition. While not a copy of the Arrowsmith, it clearly followed the Arrowsmith map in most areas. The atlas volume contains, in addition to the large map, plans of ports from Acapulco to the Aleutians, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and the mouth of the Columbia. The chart of San Francisco Bay is based on Beechey's chart of 1833, improved by de Mofras' own explorations, particularly in the north bay. This copy belonged to the Prince of Coburg, with a presentation inscription from the author. The large map is hand painted in outline color, all others are without color. Covers of the volumes are half leather dark green cloth covered boards with a crown embossed on the front in gilt. The title "De Mofras. Mexique. Californie. Oregon. 1" is stamped in gilt on the spine of volume one, "... 2" on volume two, and "...Atlas" on the atlas. Rare.

This was the best general map of the American West published by the Topographical Engineers until the Emory and Warren maps of 1857. Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. The first great atlas of Mexico, produced by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Sabin says only 300 copies were printed. The maps are of each province, with each surrounded by text. Phillips lists two later editions of 1886 with somewhat different titles. The only atlas of Mexico listed by Phillips that is earlier than this atlas is Humboldt's Atlas...de la Nouvelle Espagne of 1811. Has two very interesting plates at the end that relate to Aztec writing. Garcia Cubas was 26 when he published this. Strangely, then, the verso of the title page has 1846 as the copyright date (when the author was 14?). Maps hand col. with outline color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with title embossed in gold on the spine reading "Garcia y Cubas. Atlas geografico de la Republica Mexicana."
