2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine.

1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color.

This is Thomas Streeter's copy of this important map, identified as such by the inclusion of his handwriting on the inside cover, and the words "Louis Billon 1849" in ink on the inside front cover and verso of map. The border includes twelve views. As noted in Streeter, "This later issue of lot 3873 differs in the binding and in showing not only the 'Gold Region' near New Helvetia, but also 'El Dorado or Gold Region' along the Feather River. It also has quite an extensive 'Table of Distances' added at the right of the inset." This is the second 1849 edition, which was also produced as a wall map (see our #4312). In this edition Fremont's route is shown along the Humboldt River, and California has been extensively remapped. Map is in full color and folds into the original blind-stamped covers, 16x11, with the title "Colton's Map of the United States Mexico &c." in gilt on the front cover.

The seventh edition. Michigan peninsula has been substantially redrawn, the profiles in the lower left corner of the map have been eliminated to reveal a good bit of Republican Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa are shown, Missouri is enlarged in the northwestern corner, and new counties are added in most of the settling states. This is a major revision of the map. There is added a new key index system of numbers (and letters for Texas) to go with an attached "Alphabetical Index to the Four Sheet Map of The United States" (see our #4846). The index is bound in patterned tan cloth covered boards 18.5x11 with a label reading "Index Of Places, Contained On Tanner's Map Of The United States." Most copies of this map are either colored in outline or in full color by state, this copy is in full color by county - the only such example we have seen. Streeter Texas 1232 is the 1836 edition of this map, which apparently shows Texas in much the same form and includes the separate index volume. Map is edged in green cloth, dissected into 60 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into the original half leather red cloth covers 22x17 with ties, title on the spine is stamped in gold and reads "Map Of The United States With Index 1839."
