This is the thin paper copy with smaller ornamental border and no publisher credit. Wheat believes it was folded into some copies of Farnham's "Life, Adventures, and Travels in California;" our copies of that book have the Haven map pasted in one (see our #3963) and this map pasted in the other (see our #5001). This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce.

4th edition, corrected to 1812, but dated 1804. This map was originally issued in 1804. This copy is dated 1804 but is corrected for political and topographical changes to 1812. It shows Louisiana and Missouri Territory, both of which were established in 1812. There has been extensive redrawing of the Mississippi River from the junction of the Ohio north to the Wyaconda River (probably due to the public surveys in southern Illinois, evidenced by the appearance of Township and Range lines there). Numerous other changes from the 1804 edition have been made throughout the map adding new counties, towns, roads, and changed physical features, primarily in the mid and western portions. So far I have been able to identify 1804, 1806, 1809, and 1812 editions, but it is likely that other editions will be discovered. The dates are estimates based on the political changes on the maps - all editions are dated 1804 on the title. Since it was a postal map and needed to be current as to towns, road and counties, it is probable that the map was updated every few years, until a new plate was made in 1819 by Harrison (Karpinski 59, Karrow 1-1466). The 1796 edition of this map (a different engraving) was changed four times in as many years (Wheat & Brun 127-130). The 1819 edition became the official post office map in 1825, used until 1829 (Ristow). All of the 1804 to 1812 editions were originally engraved by Francis Shallus of Philadelphia. With outline color. This copy in original condition, dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen, in original quarter leather marbled covers 27x20 with ties (remnants now) and title "Bradley's U. States" stamped in gild on the spine.

Note
With insets of the West Indies and a Statistical Table. This map has the distinction of being the first large scale detailed map made in the U.S. that showed the entire country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This copy is an early state of the first edition -this is Martin's third state of the first edition and Ristow's fourth state (Ristow discovered a town and trail added in Ohio - Adelphi - making for a sub state of Martin's third state). The first state was an incomplete proof copy, making this the second/third state of the completed copy. The differences between this and the first complete state are small: Mansfield, Wooster, and Adelphi (and a trail from Adelphi to Athens and Chillicothe) added in Ohio, and "Vevay or" added before "Swiss Vineyards" in southeastern Indiana. Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the 1816 edition. Melish published new editions in 1818 (five states), 1819 (two states), 1820 (eight states), 1822 (two states), and 1823 (one state) for a total of twenty five different issues. Notwithstanding the many issues, the map has become extremely rare. A book accompanied the map (though issued separately) titled "A Geographical Description of the United States..." (see our #2424). Outline color by state or territory. This copy is dissected into 40 sections, backed with linen, and edged in brown cloth. It folds with marbled end sheets into new blue cloth folding boards and slip case 24.5x16.5 with leather label on spine reading "Melish. Map Of The United States. 1816" in gold.

This is the most ambitious Coloney & Fairchild strip or ribbon map: it shows the Mississippi River from its delta to its source at Lake Itaska, a distance of 2600 miles. It is backed on linen and rolls into paper covered spool with a hand crank. This is the revised edition, with much additional material added on river towns by William Bowen, President of the Pilot's Association of St. Louis (this information comes from the promotion for this map printed on the Ribbon Map of New York City). No record of the first issue found, although a copy exists at the Minnesota Historical Society. The river is colored blue against a black and white background. Distances from New Orleans are printed on the river at intervals to the source. Karrow's listing is for a variant: the map printed in five strips on one sheet and folded into the 1866 edition of Edward's Gazetteer of the Mississippi River. Scarce.

2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine.

The date is estimated from the shown railway development, although the figures "D.78" appear on the left bottom, and that usually would indicate an 1878 date, however, none of the 1878 maps show the line developed as far as it is on the map. But 1878 may be the correct date, with the map showing the lines under construction - this would tie the broadside closer to the Black Hills gold rush of 1877 and explain the prominently shown Black Hills and the town of Deadwood on the map.

Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. Buffalo are present in "inumerable bands," and it is suggested that the dung be used for fuel. Timber is scarce , except on the islands. It is noted that the Pawnee pose a threat to the traveler as they are likely to rob the emigrants along the route. A note from Fremont's report about the first viewing of the buffalo is included below the map.

Note
Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place.

The accompanying notes state, "This is the most trying section for the traveller on the whole route. Water, though good and plenty, is difficult to reach, as the river is hemmed in by high and vertical rocks and many of the bystreams are without water in the dry season. Grass is only to be found at the marked camping places, and barely sufficient to keep strong animals from starvation. Game there is none. The road is very rough by volcanic rocks, detrimental to wagons and carts. In sage bushes consists the only Fuel. Lucky, that by all these hardships the traveller is not harassed by the Indians, who are peacable & harmless."

Note
This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

First edition of Tanner's guide. In pocket map form, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States."

The first edition. With inset maps of fourteen cities, South Florida, Oregon and the Mandan Districts (with a chart of the Outlet of Oregon River), two Statistical tables, and fourteen profiles of portages, canals and railroads. With Tanner's "Memoir...Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." This was one of the most popular general maps of the eastern United States and went through several editions (Phillips, Karrow, Yale, and Howes show editions of 1829, 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1843, and 1850). Distances on all major roads are shown between towns, an effort that Tanner states in the Memoir caused the map to take twice as long to produce. Latitude is measured from Washington, D.C., making this a truly "American" map. Although Tanner states that "The new map of the United States is founded on, and embraces generally, the valuable and original information, contained in our American Atlas," the general form of the map bears a striking resemblance to J.&A. Walker's Map of the United States published in London in 1827, a fact that Tanner does not mention. Howes (T23) shows "An Alphabetical Index to the four sheet map of the United States," also to accompany editions of the map. This is one of best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period, without equal until Mitchell produced the first edition of his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in 1834. Kept in a half leather case with ties to keep it closed. Measuring 23x18, it has "Tanner's United States" embossed on the red leather spine.

Map shows the air route from Los Angeles to Columbus in full color. From Clovis, New Mexico to Waynoka, Oklahoma it was still necessary to travel that section by rail. The map also shows the TAT weather reporting stations begun specifically to service this air route. By teletype the observers were able to communicate with the pilots about weather conditions in the upcoming regions. The "Certificate of Flight" was completed by Mason Menefee. He departed Los Angeles on April 25, 1930 and went as far as St. Louis, Missouri.
