Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color.

In addition to the six panoramas of the seat of war, Bachmann did a view of Richmond (Stephenson 621, illustrated p271), and of the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers (Stephenson 1.5) - which may be similar to the Kentucky - Tennessee Seat of War view, at least in terms of vantage point. Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black.

Note
The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. Bancroft & Company, 1871."

1st edition was 1864. From Bancroft's Map the of Pacific States which appeared in 1863. 1st ed 1868. From Pacific States map. This is the only edition of this map published by A.L. Bancroft. H.H. Bancroft published the first edition in 1868. The southern mate to this map was published in many more editions: 1868, 71, 73, 76 and 78. When comparing this edition to the original 1867 "mother" map, there are many changes in the eastern half of the map, especially the area around Yellowstone Lake, western Montana and eastern Idaho. The litho is beginning to look tired in some places. Full color by county. Map is folded into patterned navy blue cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Bancroft's Map of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, And British Columbia." stamped in gilt.

Note
1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color.
