Note This early bluebacked chart published by Blunt and engraved by William Hooker covers the east coast of the United States from New York to Havana. It is very large, over eight feet long, and has numerous coastal views. Inset charts: Plan of Little Egg Harbour ... -- Sapello Bar & Sound ... -- A plan of the entrance into Winyaw Bay, George Town, S.C. -- Beaufort Harbor -- Ocracock Bar including Shell Castle -- Charleston Harbor -- The harbor at Port Royal -- The inlet of St. Mary's River -- Plan of the entrance & harbour of St. Augustin -- Entrance to the harbour of Havanna ... 1818. The 1st ed. was 1815, this being the 2nd "Improved" ed. according to the detailed catalog of Blunt and Hooker's charts and books on the verso. Blunt charts as early as 1820 are scarce. There may have been an additional "wing" sheet attached to the bottom sheet and showing the Bahama Banks, but not present in Rumsey Collection copy. Relief shown by hachures, depths by soundings. Printed on 6 sheets, Rumsey Collection copy mounted as 1 sheet, and has pencil annotations.

Note This is the first year of Colton's map publishing business. Ristow says that Colton published his first map in 1833, Burr's map of New York State, this U.S. map must be as early. The graphic style is similar to Burr's Universal Atlas maps, engraved the following year. With six detailed and elegant inset maps showing the environs of Albany, Boston, New York, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and Baltimore & Washington, plus a small inset map of South Part of Florida. Outline color, folded into dark teal leather covers 13.5x8 with "Burr's Map of the United States Published By J.H. Colton & Co. New York" and a decorative border stamped in gilt. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington.

This edition is still hand colored, and, although larger than the 1889, it is the same map, somehow blown up by the lithographic process. The coloring of this copy is particularly fine. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 19x12 with "Nell's Map of Colorado" in gilt. Relief shown by contours, hachures and spot heights. Shows counties, settlements, post offices, Indian reservations, land grants, U.S. land offices, irrigation canals, timber reserves, etc.

Note Shows roads suitable for bicycles marked in red. A very late Colton map - the date of 1892 is the copyright date, the map may be of later date, but no other date is indicated. The cover style and address of 312 Broadway is the same as the 1896 map of Staten Island. Printed outline color by township. The mustard cloth covers 16x9 are stamped with "Colton's Driving and Wheeling Map Of The Country Twenty-Five Miles North Of The City Of New York. G.W. & C.B. & Co. New York." in black, then repeated again below is "G.W. & C.B. & Co. New York". The map shows several "Colored Sett." which notation we have never seen before. A note in red above the title says "These maps are particularly intended for the use of Sportsmen, Wheelmen, and Driving Parties, and we respectfully request that any errors or omissions which may be noticed, or other Suggestions for their improvement, shall be at once reported to us, that they may be incorporated into future editions. We especially desire names of creeks and ponds and information respecting new roads, etc." There is a catalogue of Colton road maps on the inside front cover. A blue rubber stamp at top right reads "Supplied by Rand McNally & Co."

Derived from the Finley 1826 American Atlas map and issued originally by Mitchell in 1831, this edition has many changes topographically and a new border. The western part of the old Arkansas Territory is now called "Indian Territory Attached to Arkansas." There are many new counties in Missouri and Arkansas, and a table of steam boat routes appear in the lower right corner of the map. The detail in the surrounding states is now filled in. Full color, folded into red leather covers 13.5x8 with "Mitchell's Map of Missouri & Arkansas" and a decorative border in gilt.

In addition to the map changes already noted, this copy has an advertisement inside front cover for Colton's maps that is different from the first state copy's advertisement -- it mentions the coming publication of the National Atlas, the American Atlas, and the Atlas of the World -- none of which are mentioned in the earlier state's advertisement. Map is full color by state, folded into brown cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska and Kansas" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Note Blanchard died in 1904 and this map was published posthumously by his estate, under the management of his nephew, George Cram. The estate continued to publish maps until about 1917. Karrow lists the first edition of this title in 1899. With text on the "Street Numbers" and "How to Find Them." Printed outline color.
