And all the Country bordering on these Lakes and Rivers. By Thos. Hutchins, Captain in the 60 Regiment of Foot. London, Published according to Act of Parliament Novembr. ye 1st, 1778 by T. Hutchins ... Engrav'd by T. Cheevers.
List No
5044.000
Note
This map was published separately and at the same time as Hutchins' "Topographical Description..." and should accompany the book. Streeter calls it "by far the best map of the west printed to that time." It was the first large scale map of the area west of the Allegheny Mountains based on personal observations, although Hutchins gives credit to Lewis Evans' "Map of the Middle Colonies" as the best prior source of information about the area. The map contains extensive printed notes which describe important aspects of the country depicted. This map ranks with the most important American maps issued in the 18th century and is now rare. Hutchins later became the first Geographer of the United States. With outline color. Map is dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into new green cloth folding boards and quarter leather green cloth slip case 24x16 with "Hutchin's New Map Of Western Parts Of Virginia, Etc. 1778" on the spine in gold.

Grinding grain into flour using a "beehive" stone mill. A couple of miles from Armagh in Northern Ireland is Emain Macha, or Navan Fort. Based on nearby archeological excavations, Emain Macha is a living history museum depicting Iron Age life in the first 100 years A.D.
These log buildings represent a typical Cherokee homestead of the early 1800's. It was little different than that which the European settlers had. A few of the Cherokees lived even much better, with brick homes and large plantations. Many were of mixed Anglo-Saxon and Indian blood, and a few even owned slaves. But to the white settlers who were greedy for land, they were Indians who needed to be removed, even by force. When the land was taken from the Cherokees it was divided among white settlers by lottery.
The inscription on the west side of this monument reads:
ERECTED BY THE,
JEFFERSON DAVIS CHAPTER
UNITED DAUGHTERS
OF THE CONFEDERACY,
1910
The inscription on the east side reads:
"MAN WAS NOT BORN
TO HIMSELF ALONE
BUT TO HIS COUNTRY."
In front of the monument are the words: TO OUR KNOWN AND UNKNOWN CONFEDERATE DEAD.
Overlooking downtown Cleveland, in Fort Hill Cemetary, are the graves of more than 270 unknown Confederate soldiers, killed in battle.
I grew up just a few blocks from this monument and used to walk past it often as a young man.
This bark grinder was used by pioneer settlers for crushing the bark of trees to obtain tannin, a necessary ingredient in the tanning of animal hides. A mule would be used to power the grinder, walking around in circles to turn the heavy stone.
