North America, published the 12th of August 1804. By R. Wilkinson, No.58, Cornhill, London. E. Bourne Sculp.

Note
First edition. Full color. This beautiful, rare map is the first to show the entire Louisiana Territory as part of the United States, both in the delineated boundaries on the map and in the table showing the possessions of the United States: "Province, Ceded by France 30 Apr. 1803, Louisiana." The Bradley "Map of The United States..." of June 2nd, 1804, is the first map to mention the event: ôThe French call the country West of Conecuh River Louisiana & have ceded it to the United States," but the Bradley map shows only a small portion of Louisiana Territory just west of the Mississippi River. Wilkinson follows Arrowsmith's geography (from his "New Discoveries..." map of 1802) in the Rocky Mountain and the Oregon River areas, but adds new settlements and place names not on Arrowsmith's map along the northwest coast. Franklinia is shown between Tennessee and North Carolina. Wheat trashes the 1824 issue (which is unchanged from the 1804) as hopelessly out of date, but this 1804 issue was not seen by Wheat and is very accurate and forward looking for its period. The large folio General Atlas that this map appeared in is elusive: it is not listed in any references (Phillips lists only Wilkinson's smaller General Atlas issues, even though he refers to one or two issues as folio in size). Wilkinson mentions publishing it in parts, with eleven maps completed by 1808 and thirty five completed by 1823 (noted on the index pages of his quarto General and Classical Atlases of those dates). It seems to be as scarce as this North America map.

This is a copy of the 1804 Wilkinson North America map, here printed on linen. Very Scarce. Wilkinson's map of 1804 has been somewhat simplified to allow for limited detail due to printing on fabric. See our #5156 for the Wilkinson 1804 map (see also our copy of the 1826 reissue of Wilkinson's map which appears to be unchanged from the 1804 issue). With a decorative border of vines and tiny vignettes. John Faupel suggested this was probably made as a "commemorative" piece in a very small issue.

Note
The first edition, listed in Phillips but not by Stevens and Tree or Wheat (both list 1824/25 as the first edition). A large impressive map showing with great accuracy the recent discoveries in the north west passage, but wildly off in the American southwest - Wheat: "a large and beautiful map, excellent in all respects save for its southwestern geography." In the southwest, Wyld adds many mountain ranges that were purely speculative - probably just to fill in blank spaces in the map (unlike Arrowsmith). In northwestern Texas is a curious note on the topography of the area attributed to "Mellish" which is copied from a pre-1822 edition of his large map of the United States. Comparing this edition to the derived map of 1846, "Mexico, the British Possessions...," one sees many changes in the northern areas and few in the southwest. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1824, 1827/8, 1838, and 1851/56. The 1824/25 edition adds a fold out flap of Mexico and Central America (WH copy). With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into a brown marbled paper covered slip case with black leather spine with "Map Of North America" stamped in gilt.

Maps dated 1743-71. Most of D'Anville's atlases were made up for the individual customer, so it appears that no two are alike. Many of the maps are multisheet maps that have here been joined, so the actual map sheet count is about 45. This set is accompanied by a printed list of "Cartes Geographiques de M. D'Anville" with the maps numbered 1-38 in ms, corresponding to the maps in the atlas. This sheet also lists "Ouvrages par ecrit, et qui ont ete imprimes." One of the listed books is dated 1777. D'Anville's maps have a clarity and directness that is very "modern." He read widely, and incorporated the best available geographic knowledge into his work. The English and others copied from his maps extensively. Many of the maps were missing when we acquired this atlas, and have been added subsequently. Maps stored, some bound, in a binding with half leather and cloth ties. "Atlas" printed on the spine.
