Full Title
(Title Page to) Geographical exercises, calculated to facilitate the study of geography, and, by an expeditious method, to imprint a knowledge of the science on the minds of youth. With a concise introduction, explaining the principles of geography. By William Faden. London: Printed for the proprietor (successor to the late Mr. Jefferys, Geographer to the King) at the Corner of St. Martin's Lane, Charing-Cross. MDCCLXXVII.
List No
2835B
Note
Includes engraved illustration of globe, telescope, anchor, building and ships. Atlas of 9 completed and 9 outline maps. The maps are beautifully executed and quite large. According to Faden in the preface, this was a project begun by Jefferys before his death in 1771 and now completed by Faden. Faden also says that Henry Peacham used outline maps for teaching in the early part of the 17th century, but that they had not been used since then, at least in England (see our copy of Courcillon de Dangeau's teaching atlas of 1693 which used outline maps). There is an introduction which explains basic geographical principals and map drawing. The maps are dated 1773-76. The World Map on Mercator's Projection includes Cook's tracks. Scarce. Not listed in Phillips, NMM, World, Tooley. Faden published an Atlas Minimus for the use of schools in 1798 (Phillips 690), but the format was much smaller and did not use outline maps -- it was an atlas with 55 maps. W.H. has a later edition with several maps dated 1783. B. McC. has a copy that a copy that is similar to ours, but Jeffrey's name has been removed from all but the America map, probably indicating a slightly later date than this one. All three copies are dated 1777 on the title page. Maps have outline color. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Faden's geography for youth" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Dated 1812 on the title page, with one map dated 1813 (England and Wales), the others dated 1811 or 1812. This is a charming atlas with well executed maps that are fairly typical for the period. From the title it seems that this was intended to accompany gazetteers and geographies and thus probably had some use in the schools. Darton also issued puzzle maps (see our #3407). Maps are hand painted in full color. Covers are new green marbled paper covered boards with a green leather spine and black leather label on the front reading "William Darton. This is a very unusual Lucas atlas - according to Foster, only two copies are known. The engraved title page shows a globe and books on a table, with pages open listing Lucas' products: "Drawing Materials of every kind, Paper of all sizes, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, Maps, and Atlases of every description suitable for Colleges and Schools constantly for sale by the Publisher." It has 31 of the Tanner and Harrison engraved maps of the continents and foreign countries that appeared in the (1815) and (1816) "New And Elegant General Atlas" (only Netherlands bears Lucas' imprint, engraved by Young & Delleker, and is basically the same as the map that appears in the 1823 "General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps..." ). Of the remaining 36 maps, 8 are of South America and the West Indies and are unchanged in the 1823 atlas, the other 28 maps are in many cases early states of the new U.S. maps that appear in the 1823 atlas and replace the Tanner engraved U.S. maps of 1815 and 1816 atlases. They all have Lucas' imprint and show various engravers, Welch, Young & Delker, Cone & Freeman, Kneass, and Hufty. Compared to the early 1823 atlas (our #4584), 16 of the 28 U.S. maps are earlier issues, with only one being a later issue - New Hampshire shows Merrimack County (1823) which does not appear on the early 1823 atlas map (this was probably drawn in anticipation of creation). Of particular note are: Louisiana, a double page map engraved by Harrison and "Reduced from W. Darby's Four Sheet Map" which is dated 1817 as does not show Alabama or Arkansas Territory, and a map of "North Western and Michigan Territories" which is the same base map as the 1823 "Michigan Ter." but shows a much smaller Michigan in a configuration that Paullin dates as 1819 with a large North Western Territory extending to the west. Karpinski 94 incorrectly dates this map as "certainly as late as 1824" while mentioning that Phillips dates it 1819 (?). We cannot find the Phillips entry, but we bel

The first edition, first state (see our first edition, second state for comparison, #444) of Lucas' best general atlas and the finest general atlas produced in the U.S. at the time (In asserting this we omit the Tanner and Finley American Atlases of 1823 and 1826 respectively because they were not general atlases - cartographically they may have been superior to the Lucas, but not as broad in coverage). The quality of the engraving (most of the U.S. maps were engraved by B.T. Welch, others by Young & Delker, J.V.N. Throop, Cone & Freeman, and Kneass) is superb, the detail is very fine, and the coloring is delicate and elegant. While the same Lucas drawn base maps were used iin this atlas and the 1822 American Atlas by Carey and Lea (and thereby created strained relations between him and Carey and Lea), the maps in this Lucas Atlas are far superior in quality - Welch reengraved many of the maps for Lucas that Young & Delker had engraved for Carey and Lea. It is interesting to note that the Carey and Lea maps are usually earlier states of the Lucas maps. The Atlantic Islands and the West Indies Island Maps are mostly copied from Thomson's General Atlas of 1817 (see our copy, #1007) as is the Mountains and Rivers plate (reduced). Many maps are derived from the earlier Lucas Atlas of 1815-17 which copied the Oddy Atlas maps for the non U.S. state maps. Some copies have solid color. Maps of Mexico, Canada, and N. America (updated by Lucas in the Arctic), are copied from Arrowsmith's "General Atlas" of 1823 (first ed. was 1817). The classical maps derive from Melish's "Atlas of Ancient Geography" of 1815. Half leather with marbled paper covered boards, thick outline color, title on spine - "Lucas Cabinet Atlas."

This is an unusually thorough teaching atlas for the period: each map has marginal text on both sides which explains the function of the map -- topographical, historical, political, etc. Because of its comprehensiveness, this atlas must have been used by advanced students of geography. Editions were published in 1767, 1780, 1787, 1791 and 1793. Clouet also published a set of wall maps of the continents between 1776 and 1793. Full color. Note
This large one volume 1856 edition is scarcer than the two volume edition. Initially, Colton's atlas was published by subscription (see our subscribers salesman's book) and in parts, then in a two volume edition with the first volume (North and South America) issued in 1855 and the second volume (Europe, Asia, etc.)in 1856. This atlas was the first world atlas produced by Colton, after many years of issuing pocket maps, wall maps, guides, and maps for books. The atlas was one of the finest and most accurate of the period - it had a long publishing run, continuing for over thirty years (with the title changed to Colton's General Atlas after 1856). In this issue, the Texas map is single page, 2nd state. New Mexico and Utah 2nd state. Bound into quarter leather embossed brown cloth covered boards with "Colton's Atlas Of The World" and an illustration stamped in gold. The same title is stamped on the spine. Full color maps.
