Note
A rare guide and map (actually two maps on one sheet) that is a "cousin" of Mitchell's "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with The Regions Adjoining" also issued in 1846. Although Howes lists this under Mitchell, Mitchell's name is not on any part of the guide or map, Streeter lists it under Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., the publisher. There are 62 pages of text and several woodcut illustrations. The two full color maps are titled "Map of That Part of the West Coast of North America Comprising Oregon and Upper California" (26x20) and "Map of the State of Texas With Portions of the Adjoining Regions" (26x20) both printed on one sheet. These maps are earlier states of similar maps with slightly different titles that appear in Mitchell's School Atlas of 1846, maps #13 and #15. The School Atlas was published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. and the maps in it were copyrighted by Mitchell (this may be the reason Howes lists this "Geographical Description..." under Mitchell). The stamped leather covers 13.5x8 to both of these guides are the same with the exception that they are red in this copy. So I presume that Thomas, Cowperthwait issued this to compete with Mitchell's guide, yet somehow had Mitchell's cooperation in using the maps and the covers (assuming that Mitchell had some control over these). The two maps are impressive taken together and although smaller than Mitchell's "New Map of Texas, Oregon and California" they are very elegant. This guide is much rarer that Mitchell's guide and sold for two and one half times more at the Streeter sale.

This is an exceptionally attractive map of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. It was issued with Richardson's Texas Almanac of 1861 or possibly the 1862 issue (almanac not present). Railroads completed and in progress are particularly well delineated, and a box of text in the lower left corner (pasted on top of an earlier printing) lists the completed railroads and their proposed extensions as well as one canal, the Galveston Bay and Brazos River. In the lower right is an inset map of the proposed route of the Arkansas Railroad. The topography, coasts and rivers are accurately delineated, with the source being the outstanding Map of Texas and part of Mexico, 1857, issued by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers (see our #5141). Pressler's Map of the State of Texas, 1858, is a secondary source, as is J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas which was published in Desilver's 1859 (Mitchell's) New Universal Atlas (see our #4557). Richardson's map is a serious production, far more up to date than the Colton, Johnson, or Desilver/Mitchell atlas maps of 1861, and more accurate in west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico than the Pressler 1858 Texas (although Pressler issued an 1862 revised edition, not seen by us, that may be much improved). The first issue of Richardson's map appeared in the 1859 edition of the Texas Almanac, with the map dated 1859, copyright 1858 (Winkler 1052), again in the 1860 Almanac, with the map dated 1860, and our copy, dated 1861 and presumably appearing in the 1861 Almanac (Rosenberg 322B states that the Almanacs for 1857, and 1862-65 did not contain maps). Two other maps appeared in the Richardson Almanacs: J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas (from Desilver's atlas) in the 1858 Almanac (Winkler 886 note) and Richardson's New Map of Texas, published by G.W. and C.B. This is the third edition of this scarce and important map of Texas. The first edition was issued in 1833 and the second edition in 1834. Streeter also lists an 1845 edition with the title changed to "The State of Texas." This copy was Streeter's copy with his notes on the inside front cover. The brown cloth covers 13.5x8 have "Burr's Map Of The State of Coha. & Texas Published By J.H. Colton & Co. New York" stamped in gilt. Full color. Streeter refers to this map as "the first large scale map of Texas... to show all of Texas to the Arkansas River" and states that "The Burr map, like the Austin Map, is one of the landmarks of Texas cartography..." The detail on the land grants is the best for its time. The 1833 issue shows a smaller Texas extending west to the 103rd meridian, whereas the 1834 and 1835 issues show a much expanded Texas extending west to about the 106th meridian and north to the Arkansas River. There is an inset map of Galveston Bay that Streeter refers to in his penciled notes on the inside cover as "1st detailed printed chart of Galveston Bay?" Above the inset map is a table of Distances. Yale has an 1835 edition that was issued earlier in the year than this copy - it does not show Milan's Grant in place of Beal's Grant and it does not list the four new towns that appear on our 1835 edition: Columbia, Electa, Mina and Augusta. Taliaferro 247 (illustrated) appears to be the same as Yale's copy.

3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). The seventh edition known as the "Treaty Map." This map was "the official cartographic reference consulted in negotiating the peace treaty of February 2, 1848, which terminated the Mexican war..." (Martin). The first of seven issues in 1847, this is easily identifiable by having only two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico (later issues have four). The twelfth edition was also used as a treaty map. This copy folds into red cloth covers 15x10, with "Mexico" stamped in gold, and with "Statistics of the Republic of Mexico" pasted on the inside front cover. Signature of Cornelius S. Van Alstine, U.S. Navy, on verso of map. Streeter refers to this seventh edition as "the most important edition of the Disturnell map." Map is in full color.

With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy).

The five maps which accompany Pike's report are of great importance, especially the two maps of Louisiana which Wheat calls "maps of outstanding historic interest... beautifully drawn." Note
Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt.

This is a very late edition of this map, not listed in any of the standard references. The main map shows much new county development in the western part of the state as well as a redrawing of many of the rivers in the northwestern part and the upper end of the Rio Grande. The inset map has changed from a rectangle to an oval, still showing the Western States from the Colton U.S. map. Colton is not listed as publisher of this edition on the map, but the stamped dark brown cloth covers 16x10 say "J. De Cordova's Texas Published by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Full color.

Note
First edition of Pressler's revision of De Cordova's map, and first edition published by Colton. Shows Texas east of the 102nd meridian. First issued by De Cordova in 1849, with editions of 1850, 51, 53, 56, 57, 58, and 61 (Ristow and Rosenberg), and a late unlisted edition in 1867 (see our #4801). De Cordova employed Pressler to revise the map in 1855 and then sold the rights to Colton in the same year. The 1849 edition has only two copies located. Eberstadt called the 1849 issue "possibly the finest (Texas map) of the period." Colton changed the inset map from the oval showing all of Texas to the southwestern portion of Colton's U.S. atlas map. J.M. Atwood was the engraver of all editions. With a list of the Land districts, this map was useful for both land promoters and settlers. Colton published a reduced version of the map in his 1856 Atlas of the World. The full color map is folded into stamped dark maroon leather covers 16x10.5 with "J. De Cordova's Texas J.H. Colton & Co. New York." in gilt.

Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt.

1st edition. Not in Streeter, Phillips, Wheat. Map shows routes of important reconnaissances, Indian trails, roads, railroads in operation, projected railroads, army routes, Indian lands and reservations. One of the earliest detailed Army surveys of the area. The map was printed in two sheets, a north sheet and a south sheet. The north sheet appears in the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies as Plate CXIX, with the same title as this map, but with the title placed in the upper right corner of the north sheet. We also have the North sheet without title, dated c1875, with much additional information on new routes, railroads, etc. This map is signed by William E. Merrill, Maj. Engrs., and dated August 10, 1867. Merrill also signed our copy of the Warren Map of the U.S., 1867, with a signature date of August 26, 1867 Merrill later made maps of Kansas (See Karrow). Graff misspells Merrill's name, as does Streeter (his signature is hard to read). Dissected into 48 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into two dark green cloth end boards 22.5x13.5 with paper label reading "Kansas, Texas, And Indian Territory, With Parts Of Colorado And New Mexico. Engineer Bureau, W.D. Prepared for Issue in Engineer Office, M.D. Mo. All Person Into Whose Hands The Map Falls Are Particularly Requested To Send All Corrections And Additions To The Chief Engineer, Mil. Div.
