The seventh edition known as the "Treaty Map." This map was "the official cartographic reference consulted in negotiating the peace treaty of February 2, 1848, which terminated the Mexican war..." (Martin). The first of seven issues in 1847, this is easily identifiable by having only two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico (later issues have four). The twelfth edition was also used as a treaty map. This copy folds into red cloth covers 15x10, with "Mexico" stamped in gold, and with "Statistics of the Republic of Mexico" pasted on the inside front cover. Signature of Cornelius S. Van Alstine, U.S. Navy, on verso of map. Streeter refers to this seventh edition as "the most important edition of the Disturnell map." Map is in full color.

With insets of the West Indies and a Statistical Table. This map has the distinction of being the first large scale detailed map made in the U.S. that showed the entire country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This copy is an early state of the first edition -this is Martin's third state of the first edition and Ristow's fourth state (Ristow discovered a town and trail added in Ohio - Adelphi - making for a sub state of Martin's third state). The first state was an incomplete proof copy, making this the second/third state of the completed copy. The differences between this and the first complete state are small: Mansfield, Wooster, and Adelphi (and a trail from Adelphi to Athens and Chillicothe) added in Ohio, and "Vevay or" added before "Swiss Vineyards" in southeastern Indiana. Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the 1816 edition. Melish published new editions in 1818 (five states), 1819 (two states), 1820 (eight states), 1822 (two states), and 1823 (one state) for a total of twenty five different issues. Notwithstanding the many issues, the map has become extremely rare. A book accompanied the map (though issued separately) titled "A Geographical Description of the United States..." (see our #2424). Outline color by state or territory. This copy is dissected into 40 sections, backed with linen, and edged in brown cloth. It folds with marbled end sheets into new blue cloth folding boards and slip case 24.5x16.5 with leather label on spine reading "Melish. Map Of The United States. 1816" in gold.

With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy).

The five maps which accompany Pike's report are of great importance, especially the two maps of Louisiana which Wheat calls "maps of outstanding historic interest... beautifully drawn." Pike's map of New Spain was copied from Humboldt's manuscript map, although Humboldt did not publish his map until 1811. All maps uncolored and bound into the back of the book. Full leather covers with "Pike's Expeditions" imprinted on the spine.

1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. In 2 volumes newly bound in full leather with the title "Lewis & Clark's Expedition ..." stamped in gilt on the spine.

Rene Paul, the city surveyor, first issued this map in 1842. In 1835 Paul did a larger map of St. Louis separately and for Eugene Charles Dupre's Atlas of the City and County of St. Louis (illustrated in Ristow p.296, Karrow 9-1553-4). This earlier map was lithographed by Lehman & Duval. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 13x8 with "Map Of The City Of St. Louis, 1844" printed in black on yellow paste down label.

Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover.

Considered to be the best book on California prior to the American occupation. Wheat calls the large map "a landmark...It made these western regions known in European official circles...his highly original map has much to commend it." Wheat neglects to mention the similarities between this map and the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America, 1837 edition. While not a copy of the Arrowsmith, it clearly followed the Arrowsmith map in most areas. The atlas volume contains, in addition to the large map, plans of ports from Acapulco to the Aleutians, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and the mouth of the Columbia. The chart of San Francisco Bay is based on Beechey's chart of 1833, improved by de Mofras' own explorations, particularly in the north bay. This copy belonged to the Prince of Coburg, with a presentation inscription from the author. The large map is hand painted in outline color, all others are without color. Covers of the volumes are half leather dark green cloth covered boards with a crown embossed on the front in gilt. The title "De Mofras. Mexique. Californie. Oregon. 1" is stamped in gilt on the spine of volume one, "... 2" on volume two, and "...Atlas" on the atlas. Rare.

First edition, first issue. A larger version of the accompanying map was issued in 1842 with scale of 1:600,000 - this version is unknown to us (and anyone else we have met)- Bray states that only 200 copies were printed, the House of Representatives issued this 1843 edition in 1845 with no changes, although Wagner Camp says the map was smaller and Bray states that it was a more faithful representation of the original 1842 map. See Donald Jackson, The Expeditions of John Charles Fremont, for a history of the Nicollet map and all the Fremont maps. Fremont worked extensively with Nicollet on this map and "this was the work which trained Fremont in cartography." (Jackson). This map was the earliest accurate map of the Northern Plains and the Upper Mississippi. G.K. Warren, in his Memoir, stated that this "map was one of the greatest contributions ever made to American geography." Nicollet died in 1843. His map was years ahead of its time, with its regional concept and sound basis in instrument readings and astronomically determined points. Goetzmann: "Had he lived one more decade, Nicollet would undoubtedly have become the official government cartographer of the whole trans-Mississippi West." Rebound in brown fabric covers with "Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi, I.N. Nicollet, 1843" in gold on the spine.

Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place.

The accompanying notes state, "This is the most trying section for the traveller on the whole route. Water, though good and plenty, is difficult to reach, as the river is hemmed in by high and vertical rocks and many of the bystreams are without water in the dry season. Grass is only to be found at the marked camping places, and barely sufficient to keep strong animals from starvation. Game there is none. The road is very rough by volcanic rocks, detrimental to wagons and carts. In sage bushes consists the only Fuel. Lucky, that by all these hardships the traveller is not harassed by the Indians, who are peacable & harmless."

This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

This was the best general map of the American West published by the Topographical Engineers until the Emory and Warren maps of 1857. Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. Map is without color.

Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy).

This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold.

The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. Without color.
