Note
State I of this map (State II lists only J. Reid as publisher). This map is taken from the first official plan of Washington published by Andrew Ellicott in 1792 (see Wheat & Brun 531). The Reid map is not an exact copy, with the title moved from the upper right to the lower left, several notes not included, and other elements moved. An exact copy of Reid's map appears in the London edition of Winterbotham's "View of the United States of America" (see our #3885). Howes gives precedence to the London edition, so it is not clear if Reid or Russell copied the Ellicott first. The Reid American Atlas index does not call for the Washington map, leading to the assumption that it was added to some copies afterwards, and speculation that it may have been sold as a separate. Scarce.

Scarce, unusual map of Auburn, New York. I can find no references to this beautiful map. A plan of the village is in the map's center, with large views of the Theological Seminary and the State Prison on the left and right corners. Nine views of public buildings are on the right, some of which have "J.J. Hagaman, Arch." written below. I presume this is our map maker Hagaman. Beneath the title is a profile of the Erie Canal. The entire map has a stark, black and white aspect, heightened by the view of the State Prison which has a black sky above it.

Note
This is an exceptionally attractive map of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. It was issued with Richardson's Texas Almanac of 1861 or possibly the 1862 issue (almanac not present). Railroads completed and in progress are particularly well delineated, and a box of text in the lower left corner (pasted on top of an earlier printing) lists the completed railroads and their proposed extensions as well as one canal, the Galveston Bay and Brazos River. In the lower right is an inset map of the proposed route of the Arkansas Railroad. The topography, coasts and rivers are accurately delineated, with the source being the outstanding Map of Texas and part of Mexico, 1857, issued by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers (see our #5141). Pressler's Map of the State of Texas, 1858, is a secondary source, as is J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas which was published in Desilver's 1859 (Mitchell's) New Universal Atlas (see our #4557). Richardson's map is a serious production, far more up to date than the Colton, Johnson, or Desilver/Mitchell atlas maps of 1861, and more accurate in west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico than the Pressler 1858 Texas (although Pressler issued an 1862 revised edition, not seen by us, that may be much improved). The first issue of Richardson's map appeared in the 1859 edition of the Texas Almanac, with the map dated 1859, copyright 1858 (Winkler 1052), again in the 1860 Almanac, with the map dated 1860, and our copy, dated 1861 and presumably appearing in the 1861 Almanac (Rosenberg 322B states that the Almanacs for 1857, and 1862-65 did not contain maps). Two other maps appeared in the Richardson Almanacs: J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas (from Desilver's atlas) in the 1858 Almanac (Winkler 886 note) and Richardson's New Map of Texas, published by G.W. and C.B. Colton (Day 428 - about the same size as the Colton atlas map of 1867 and possibly related) and issued in the 1867 Almanac. Desilver stopped map publishing ar

A beautiful, early map of Philadelphia in full period color. The scale is given at 75 Perches to 1 inch. The city is shown from the Delaware River to the Schuylkil River with the environs on the north and south. 24 lettered references and 28 numbered references to important places and buildings are below the title and 24 wards are keyed in Roman numbers above the title. Many of the country houses and farms around the city are named, including Penn, Dr. Wistar, and other notable early residents. Three inset views show City Hall, the State House, Court House, Library, and Bank of the United States. The tile is surrounded by a decorative cartouche. The quality of the engraving is superb. Ristow mentions an undated edition that was possibly issued in the year Varle made the surveys, 1796, but more likely in 1802. Wheat and Brun list a c.1794 State I that has one less numbered building reference, no Roman numbered ward references, and "R. Scott Sculp. Philadelphia." This was Varle's first map published in the United States. Until 1807, Varle was known as Peter C. Varle, after 1807 he is known as Charles P. Varle.

This is the third edition of this scarce and important map of Texas. The first edition was issued in 1833 and the second edition in 1834. Streeter also lists an 1845 edition with the title changed to "The State of Texas." This copy was Streeter's copy with his notes on the inside front cover. The brown cloth covers 13.5x8 have "Burr's Map Of The State of Coha. & Texas Published By J.H. Colton & Co. New York" stamped in gilt. Full color. Streeter refers to this map as "the first large scale map of Texas... to show all of Texas to the Arkansas River" and states that "The Burr map, like the Austin Map, is one of the landmarks of Texas cartography..." The detail on the land grants is the best for its time. The 1833 issue shows a smaller Texas extending west to the 103rd meridian, whereas the 1834 and 1835 issues show a much expanded Texas extending west to about the 106th meridian and north to the Arkansas River. There is an inset map of Galveston Bay that Streeter refers to in his penciled notes on the inside cover as "1st detailed printed chart of Galveston Bay?" Above the inset map is a table of Distances. Yale has an 1835 edition that was issued earlier in the year than this copy - it does not show Milan's Grant in place of Beal's Grant and it does not list the four new towns that appear on our 1835 edition: Columbia, Electa, Mina and Augusta. Taliaferro 247 (illustrated) appears to be the same as Yale's copy.

This is the second edition of this important map, dated 1755 but published in 1757, according to the British Museum. The only change from the first issue is the addition of several panels of interesting text in ocean. The original eight printed sheets of the map are here assembled in two large panels (each with four sheets) each dissected into 36 sections and mounted on linen. Uncolored, as issued. In the sixth line of the first column of the text this issue is referred to as the Second Edition One of the most important maps in American history, it went through five editions (see Stevens). We believe this second edition is scarcer than the other editions as it appears less often on the market. Compare to the first French edition of 1856 (our copy) regarding the conflicting claims of the British and French to American territory.

This is one of the most attractive of the California Gold Rush period maps. Here it is published in pocket map form, with the 16 page "Appendix to Jackson's Map..." which describes the important mining centers. More ornate and detailed than Jackson's map of 1850, this is the only map to label Santa Cruz county "Branciforte." Shows for the first time, some of the mining activity in the south, which Jackson was involved with as an engineer. Map is full color by county, folded into dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "Jackson's Map Of The Mining Districts Of California" stamped in gilt.

1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine.

1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt.

The date of the globes is an estimate. Paired with a three inch celestial globe. On a turned wooden stand with four black ball feet, full height from base to top, 5 inches. Warner says that Wilson changed the business name from Wilson & Co. to Wilson & Sons in 1822. The celestial globe this is paired with is by Wilson & Sons, so I assume 1822 as the only year globes were made with both business names. The globe is very well engraved, showing much detail in the continents for its small size. Longitude is given from both Washington and London. Kimball notes that David Wilson, James' son, did the engraving for a new edition of the three inch globes in the early 1820's, which I assume are these globes. David later had brief success as a miniature painter, utilizing the same delicate engraving skills which he applied to these extremely well engraved globes. The three inch globe was also sold in pocket form with the celestial sphere on the inside of the case and on a stand with horizon ring and brass meridian. On this turned wooden stand version, the globe is mounted horizontally, an unusual presentation. Wilson made the first globes in the United States, with 1810 his first year of production and 1850 (by Cyrus Lancaster) his last.

Rand McNally's first globe was a 12" terrestrial produced in 1887 (Warner). This 18" floor globe appeared seven years later and is an impressive production. The graphic elements are very clearly rendered, in the best fashion of wax engraving. A horizon ring is still employed, with a metal stand that is unique and unusual, apparently of the "Aesthetic Revival" school of design that flourished at the end of the 19th century. Isothermal lines are shown for January and July, as are submarine telegraph cables. The gores show a water mark "& Sons" with a "96" below, so this globe had been issued in 1896. The political geography is pre 1898 and the Spanish American War (see Cuba, etc.). Total height from base to top of globe is 48 inches.

The Spanish "Vancouver." Atlas volume only, first edition. Sometimes attributed to Dionisio Alcala Galiano. The title of the text volume is "Relacion del Viage Hecho por las Goletas Sutil y Mexicana en al ano 1792 para reconocer el estrecho de Fuca..." The last and very important voyage up the Pacific coast to be undertaken by Spain is detailed in the nine maps and eight plates of the atlas. Galiano and Cayetano Valdes led the expedition, arriving in the northwest at the same time as Vancouver. Although the maps were published four years after the Vancouver maps, Wagner considers them in many respects to be superior, and Humboldt used them in his Essai Politique sur le Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne. Wagner further states: "The general impression today...is that the English discoveries of Vancouver were published four years before those of the Spaniards. This...is a misapprehension... The principal reason, however, why the nomenclature and geography of Vancouver came to occupy the field was that his maps were extensively copied by the famous English cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith, and later by the English Admiralty."

Note
According to Phillips, Joseph Churchman authored the text and James Churchman (brother?) authored the map. The map, 42x53, is most extraordinary and rare: it shows an eagle superimposed in engraving and color on a map of the United States, with the talons in Florida, the eye in Vermont, and the wings spreading west to the Missouri Territory. It is beautifully done. Pages 244-48 of the text explain the construction of the Eagle map, it is also stated here that the author intended to publish a larger version of the map by subscription. I have found no record of such a map being published. Book covered with blue cloth with "Rudiments of National Knowledge" on spine.
