4th edition, corrected to 1812, but dated 1804. This map was originally issued in 1804. This copy is dated 1804 but is corrected for political and topographical changes to 1812. It shows Louisiana and Missouri Territory, both of which were established in 1812. There has been extensive redrawing of the Mississippi River from the junction of the Ohio north to the Wyaconda River (probably due to the public surveys in southern Illinois, evidenced by the appearance of Township and Range lines there). Numerous other changes from the 1804 edition have been made throughout the map adding new counties, towns, roads, and changed physical features, primarily in the mid and western portions. So far I have been able to identify 1804, 1806, 1809, and 1812 editions, but it is likely that other editions will be discovered. The dates are estimates based on the political changes on the maps - all editions are dated 1804 on the title. Since it was a postal map and needed to be current as to towns, road and counties, it is probable that the map was updated every few years, until a new plate was made in 1819 by Harrison (Karpinski 59, Karrow 1-1466). The 1796 edition of this map (a different engraving) was changed four times in as many years (Wheat & Brun 127-130). The 1819 edition became the official post office map in 1825, used until 1829 (Ristow). All of the 1804 to 1812 editions were originally engraved by Francis Shallus of Philadelphia. With outline color. This copy in original condition, dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen, in original quarter leather marbled covers 27x20 with ties (remnants now) and title "Bradley's U. States" stamped in gild on the spine.

With insets of the West Indies and a Statistical Table. This map has the distinction of being the first large scale detailed map made in the U.S. that showed the entire country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This copy is an early state of the first edition -this is Martin's third state of the first edition and Ristow's fourth state (Ristow discovered a town and trail added in Ohio - Adelphi - making for a sub state of Martin's third state). The first state was an incomplete proof copy, making this the second/third state of the completed copy. The differences between this and the first complete state are small: Mansfield, Wooster, and Adelphi (and a trail from Adelphi to Athens and Chillicothe) added in Ohio, and "Vevay or" added before "Swiss Vineyards" in southeastern Indiana. Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the 1816 edition. Melish published new editions in 1818 (five states), 1819 (two states), 1820 (eight states), 1822 (two states), and 1823 (one state) for a total of twenty five different issues. Notwithstanding the many issues, the map has become extremely rare. A book accompanied the map (though issued separately) titled "A Geographical Description of the United States..." (see our #2424). Outline color by state or territory. This copy is dissected into 40 sections, backed with linen, and edged in brown cloth. It folds with marbled end sheets into new blue cloth folding boards and slip case 24.5x16.5 with leather label on spine reading "Melish. Map Of The United States. 1816" in gold.

First edition. Very large map of North America with nine inset maps of important cities. This map contains and is the basis of all the maps that appear in the Rogers and Johnston Atlas of the United States of North America, published in the same year. It is a stunning map, very detailed in the west, Wheat did not see this map, but did comment on two of the western maps in the Atlas - "This map is...notable for its clarity, though it is equally notable for the amount of information it contains. W and A.K. Johnston, of Edinburgh, were engravers who well understood their art, and their maps are outstanding." The Proposed Pacific Railway routes are shown. This map compares favorably to the large Colton and Mitchell U.S. maps of the same date (which are also on the same scale) and generally it is more accurate. Scarce, with only the later 1861 edition (title slightly changed - "Map of the United States and Mexico, with Canada...") in Karrow. This first edition is not in any references. A later edition, 1859, was issued with geological coloring (HR 13-123). The map case has Stanford's name at the bottom of the spine, indicating that he sold the map (and perhaps printed it as he did the Atlas). See also the 1861 U.S. only edition (#5405) and the full 1869 edition (#5402).

This is the first edition of the "Washington" map, so called because it used a large oval portrait of George Washington in the map's title cartouche. Later editions were published by Phelps (altered), and Thrall (identical). A portion of the main map was used by Huntington in Darby's Gazetteer (see our #2067). Oval portrait of Washington, inset maps of North America, Boston, Washington, New York, view of "The Capital at Washington." Table of distances occupies the Great Basin. Has the famous legend in the Missouri Territory: "Missouri Territory is a vast wilderness consisting chiefly of immense plains, almost destitute of wood, except in the neighborhood of streams. It is traversed by numerous herds of Buffalo & wild Horses, and by a few roving tribes of Indians." This map is also the precursor to the United States maps that appeared in Olney's School Geography, also published in Hartford. With black top and bottom rollers and green silk edging. Full color by state or territory.

1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt.

This edition has the three additional sheets at the bottom of the map (added in the second state of the 1822 edition) that expand the coverage of Mexico and the West Indies. Compared to the first 1816 edition, there are many changes in the Great Plains area of the U.S. (that first appeared in the 1822 edition) based on Long's Map of 1822 (although Melish does not mention Long in his preface to the Geographical Description edition of 1822). Ristow (A la Carte) says there are no changes between between the 1823 edition and the second state of the 1822 edition, other than the change in publisher and date. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. 1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color.

With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label.

This is Thomas Streeter's copy of this important map, identified as such by the inclusion of his handwriting on the inside cover, and the words "Louis Billon 1849" in ink on the inside front cover and verso of map. The border includes twelve views. As noted in Streeter, "This later issue of lot 3873 differs in the binding and in showing not only the 'Gold Region' near New Helvetia, but also 'El Dorado or Gold Region' along the Feather River. It also has quite an extensive 'Table of Distances' added at the right of the inset." This is the second 1849 edition, which was also produced as a wall map (see our #4312). In this edition Fremont's route is shown along the Humboldt River, and California has been extensively remapped. Map is in full color and folds into the original blind-stamped covers, 16x11, with the title "Colton's Map of the United States Mexico &c." in gilt on the front cover.

Note
Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W."

This is the reduced issue with slightly more coverage in the east and more progressed railroad development. The detail is, of course, less, due to the smaller scale, and the minerals are not colored in. Nonetheless it is still an excellent map of the west in its time, and is far more scarce than the larger issue of 1867. Full color by state, folded into brown cloth covers 18x11.5 with "Keeler's Map Of The U.S. Territories, Pacific R.R. Routes, Mineral Lands, And Indian Reservations. 1868." stamped in gilt.
