Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color.

These four maps show the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to the Mississippi, at a very large scale, and would make a map over ten feet long if joined end to end. These maps of the Ohio are the best and most original maps in the atlas: "The beautifully executed map of the Ohio River depicts vividly the wilderness that this country was at the time of his journey" (Wagner Camp). The level of detail is great: individual farms are shown with the owner's names, soundings for the entire river length, towns and villages, swamps, natural curiosities, rapids, and much else. When compared with Zadock Cramer's maps of the river in his "Navigator," the Collot maps are much superior, containing far more information on the river depths and surrounding shores and islands. Thomas Hutchins large map shows the Ohio well, but only at about one fourth the scale of the Collot maps, Andrew Ellicott's two maps of the river, at about one third the Collot scale, leave large stretches to conjecture. As an 1805 printing of a 1796 journey, these maps are without equal in depicting the early settlements on the Ohio. Without color.

Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black.

1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color.
