Circular historical diagram with movable paper hand, dial is arranged in concentric circles, each circle corresponding to one electorship; hand moves chronologically from 1200 to 1800. The chart provides a chronology of rulers within the German Empire from 1200 to 1800 - with the chart remaining blank after 1716. There are 10 concentric rings, each representing a different kingdom or sphere of influence, such as Holy Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia, King of Saxony, etc. The circle is divided into 6 centuries, with each century spanning 60 degrees. The names of the rulers are listed within each ring, and placed at the corresponding degree based on the year they came to power. The spheres of influence are also listed on the pointer, so that the pointer can be moved around the circle to any date to see the names of the noblemen on that date. Includes cherubs hold the drape style title at top and explanatory text at bottom. Title and chart in Latin; explanatory text in German. Date estimated. |

From Alex Johnson: This exceptionally attractive timewheel chronicles the reigns of the kings and dukes of 11 different jurisdictions in Italy over a period spanning from the 10th Century to the year 1720. Following the precedent set by the Eusabian Tables, the timetable permits one to cross-reference different rulers in the various regions, allowing one to make sense of the complex but interconnected dynastic politics of the Italian Peninsula and islands. The timewheel's volvelle, or turning hand, facilitates the "operation" of the piece, and the overall unusual circular arrangement of price is naturally inspired by a clock face. The peculiarity of the piece lies in the arrangement of the individual columns in the form of concentric circles. These are divided into 8 brightly-coloured segments each respectively corresponding to a century. As timetable was made in the early 1720s, the segment depicting the 18th Century is thus not even a quarter complete, such that blank space is sensibly left for one to add the names of future rulers, in their own hand. This way the timetable could be kept current, even for many years after its issue. While the present example is clean and free of notes, it appears that contemporary owners of the Weigel's timewheels took the availed themselves of opportunity to make additions. An example of a different edition of a Weigel timewheel, dated 1723, which chronicles the reigns of the rulers of the main states of Europe, found in the collections of Princeton University, features manuscript editions of subsequent rulers extending deep into the 18th Century (Rosenberg & Grafton, p. 105). Interestingly, the key to dating the present piece also represents a subtle, yet unambiguous, rhetorical message. The most recent ruler to be featured on the piece is Charles VI (1685-1740), the Austrian Habsburg who ruled as the Holy Roman Emperor and who, as labeled on the timewheel, became the King of Sicily in 1720. It is thus clear that the present piece dates from 1720 of later, but before Weigel's death in 1725. Date estimated. This chart was issued in some copies of Johann David Kohler's undated school atlas, Atlas Scholasticus et Itinerarius, and separately listed in his 1724 Anleitung zu der verbesserten Neuen Geographie. |

Circular historical diagram of the Imperial Roman Empire, with 2 maps of the Mediterranean at the center. Though the diagram is dated 1718, this is the revised edition published in Rome by Antonio de Rossi, 1721. This complex graphic timeline depicts the development of the territories belonging to the Roman Empire, to include small birds-eye views of Constantinople, Madrid, Vienna, Rome, Paris, and London, with dozens of additional city names appearing in blank bubble, apparently in anticipation of views being added in subsequent states. In the lower half of the map, there are 6 coats of arms and many blank coats of arms, again apparently in anticipation of further engraving. |

First edition, large paper copy. Chubb: "This is the first survey of the roads of England and Wales. It is composed of 102 copper plates and 200 pages of text. The maps are engraved on strips representing bands of ribbon of about 2 1/2 inches in width. On most plates six strip maps are given; but in some cases there are seven. They show the main roads only with the side roads indicated. The distances are shown in miles along the roads, and the villages and mansions named, and in some cases the names of residents are given." Ogilby was one of the finest mapmakers of his day in England and he intended to publish two additional volumes in this series: a volume of city views and a volume of topographical descriptions of all of England and Wales. Ogilby's method of strip maps to show roads was copied well into the twentieth century. While it is familiar to us today, in 1675 it was a radical departure from conventional cartographic methods. |

This map provides a detailed view of the extraordinary rebuilding of downtown San Francisco only six years after the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906. Just a few lots remain unbuilt. It is a scarce map that was issued in two forms: on thin paper as a folded map with the Supplement to the San Francisco Standard Guide, and on thicker paper unfolded (our copy, linen backed as a wall map). A reduced size reproduction of the copy at the San Francisco Society of California Pioneers Library was issued in 1968 (see our 10016.000). The Panama Pacific Exposition of 1915 is shown prospectively. A second issue of this larger map is at the Wells Fargo Museum in San Francisco - it adds a winding road going up Mount Tamalpias as well as names of buildings on the block bounded by First, Bryant, Brannon, and Beale streets. |

There are many references and symbols of the peace in the map - as such, it is one of the earliest propaganda maps. The theme of the low countries (Belgium and the Netherlands today) as a lion appears on several maps of the period and this sitting lion is considered one of the finest examples. The date is estimated, but sometime between 1611 and 1621. |

Relief shown pictorially. There are winged cherub heads in the top two spandrels. The initials "D.B." in the lower right hand corner refer to Donato Bertelli. From: [Italian composite atlases]. Map is made from a new copper plate which is a close copy of Paolo Forlani's world map, which Forlani copied from Giacomo Gastaldi's prototype world map of 1546. From Barry Ruderman: "Generally considered to be the rarest of the so-called Forlani series of World maps, Donato Bertelli's map is drawn from Paolo Forlan's World map of 1565 (Forlani 3), which in turn is based upon Giacomo Gastaldi's 1546 prototype world map and Forlani's earlier world map of 1560. The map is extremely rare, with only the British Library example cited by Shirley, to which Tooley added an example in the Beans-Lloyd-Triestin o Atlas and Woodward further located an example at the John Carter Brown. Unlike the other 4 world maps which have been definitively attributed to Forlani, the modern consensus is that this map is the original work of Donato Bertelli, whose initials appear in the title cartouche. Between 1560 and 1570, Paolo Forlani issued four world maps, with his 1565 map (Forlani 3) being the largest and the most decorative of the sequence. As with Forlani's earlier world maps, Forlani 3 is a re-interpretation of Gastaldi, however a significant addition has been made: a large and extensive southern continent is shown and labeled "Terra Incognita." Forlani has populated the unknown southern land mass with imaginary topographical features as well as unlikely animals - among them a camel, an elephant, a lion, a rhinoceros and most outlandish, a griffin and a unicorn. This feature is faithfully copied by Bertelli. By 1565, Forlani's maps of northern North America included the label "Nueva Franza" to recognize the growing French role in exploring what was still a little-known continent. Despite Gastaldi pioneering the idea of separate Asian and American continents with the addition of the Strait of Anian in 1562, both Bertelli and Forlani disregard this advance. North America is still shown joined to Asia, separated by the "Golfo di Tonzo," with Japan at its center. Many of the eastern coastal features compare well with modern maps; reflecting the incorporation of the latest knowledge about North America's shape from existing charts and explorers' descriptions. Florida and Cuba, for example, are quite accurately positioned. Bertelli's large world map was published in 1568, two years after Venice would reach what David Woodward calls the "zenith of map engraving." The map is highly decorative, featuring two cherubs in the top corners blowing the winds. Other embellishments include: numerous sea monsters, a nude figure riding a large sea creature, nine sailing vessels, and varied land animals. |

Koeman: "This the first edition ever printed with Italian text. The heirs of Abraham Ortelius sold a manuscript translation by Filippo Pigafetta to Vrients, which was then printed by him. In this translation, the Parergon and the Nomenclator were included. Apart from this, Vrients also added at the end, an Introduction to Cosmography, written by Michel Coignet. Several new maps appear here for the first time." Vrients added 8 new maps, making this combined Theatrum and Parergon edition the largest with 166 maps. 128 maps in the "Theatrum", with the "Parergon" having 38 maps, a portrait of Pope Clement VIII., dedications to Pope Clement VIII. and to Cardinal Aldobrandino, 1605. The Theatrum and Parergon plates are uncolored. The Parergon is Ortelius' atlas of ancient geography. Koeman: "This atlas of ancient geography must be regarded as a personal work of Ortelius. For this work he did not, as in the Theatrum, copy other people's maps but drew the originals himself which were later engraved by Jan Wierix i.a. He took many places and regions from the lands of classical civilization to illustrate and clarify their history, a subject very close to his heart... The maps and plates of the Parergon have to be evaluated as the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century." |

The title page has on the verso the Epigram of 16 lines. First edition of the first atlas of the world. From Koeman: "The unique position held by Ortelius' Theatrum in the history of cartography is to be attributed primarily to its qualification as 'the world's first regularly produced atlas.' Its great commercial success 'enabled it to make so great a contribution to geographical culture throughout Europe in the later 16th century.' (Skelton). Shape and contents set the standards for later atlases, when the centre of the map-trade moved from Antwerp to Amsterdam. The characteristic feature of the Theatrum is, that it consists of two elements, forming a unitary whole: text and maps. This concept for a "Theatre of the world" was followed through the 17th century. Before Ortelius, no one and done this and thus, the chorus of praise which arose as a result of this - and the excellent text - was far from slight... Another important aspect of the Theatrum is that it was the first undertaking of its kind to reduce the best available maps to a uniform format. To that end, maps of various formats and styles had to be generalized just like the modern atlas-publisher of today would do. In selecting maps for his compilation, Ortelius was guided by his critical spirit and his encyclopaedic knowledge of maps. But Ortelius did more that the atlas-makers of today: he mentioned the names of the authors of the original maps and added a great many names of other cartographers and geographers to it... Abraham Ortelius drew all his maps in manuscript before passing them to the engravers... Ortelius stated that nearly all the plates were cut by Frans Hogenberg and his assistants." The Theatrum went through many editions in Latin, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, English, and Italian. Van der Krogt lists 37 editions, with the last edition published in 1641, long after Ortelius' death in 1598. Uncolored. Text in Latin. |

Color map. With inset map of the world. Title and place names in Japanese and English. Districts, place names and businesses are named both in English and Chinese. Shows provinces, capitals. cities and towns, roads, railroads, lakes, etc. Includes legend. Relief shown by hachures. A scarce early twentieth century Japanese map of Shanghai and China which hints at the rising influence and presence of the Japanese in Shanghai and in China overall following the Treaty of Shimonoseki signed between the Japanese and Chinese at the end of the first Sino-Japanese war in 1895. The map is dated Meiji 42 (1909), the year that the International Opium Commission convened in Shanghai. The map of Shanghai is particularly notable for the minimally developed "Pootung" (Pudong) area, now the Special Economic Zone in Chuansha incorporating the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone. The Chinese City, Districts and Settlements are marked, with many buildings named in English. A legend at upper left lists Japanese businesses which are located on the map with katakana and English letters. In the Pootung district and along the Bund, the businesses and wharves are named both in English and with Chinese characters. A fascinating document of Shanghai prior to the fall of the Qing dynasty. An extraordinarily detailed map of China with names in Chinese characters (black) and English (red). There is an inset map of the world at lower right. Only one copy listed on WorldCat, at the National Diet Library in Tokyo. (notes from EB, with thanks). |

Vogdes shows this as the first edition. Vogdes says that the survey was completed in April, 1852, and that the interior topography was taken from Eddy's official map of the city. We have a reproduction of an earlier state of the chart which has no soundings and is dated 1852; it says the plan of the city was taken from the map by Cooke and Le Count; there are differences in the piers and the buildings along the piers. We can find no reference for this earlier state. In the Annual Report of the Survey for 1853, another issue of the chart was published (litho) with the addition of more notes regarding tides in the upper left - this same chart was also issued (engraved on thin paper) in the collection of charts published by the survey in 1854. Map is without color. |

State I of this map (State II lists only J. Reid as publisher). This map is taken from the first official plan of Washington published by Andrew Ellicott in 1792 (see Wheat & Brun 531). The Reid map is not an exact copy, with the title moved from the upper right to the lower left, several notes not included, and other elements moved. An exact copy of Reid's map appears in the London edition of Winterbotham's "View of the United States of America" (see our #3885). Howes gives precedence to the London edition, so it is not clear if Reid or Russell copied the Ellicott first. The Reid American Atlas index does not call for the Washington map, leading to the assumption that it was added to some copies afterwards, and speculation that it may have been sold as a separate. Scarce. |

Rare first edition of the U.S. Coast Survey map of the City of San Francisco and vicinity. Printed without color. Relief shown by contours and spot heights. Includes note and table of reference to public buildings. 1857 edition marked a significant improvement in the USCS's mapping of San Francisco. Prepared by A.F. Rogers, it captured the tremendous growth of the City, locating wharves, streets, buildings, roads, topographical features and places such as the Union Race Course and Pioneer Race Course, west of the City. While first issued and corrected in 1857, neither of the 1857 editions was never published in the regular annual Coast Survey reports until a revised edition, dated 1859, was issued. This chart was first issued in 1857, with another edition issued later in 1857 that differs from the earlier edition and is apparently the same as 1859 edition see our 1030). The first edition does not include soundings, has a shorter "note" in the top right corner, and does not include the "Blosom rock Buoy" which appears below the table. It also does not include the "hydrography by Lieut. R.M. Cuyler". OCLC locates only 3 copies of this 1857 edition at San Francisco National Maritime Museum, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and the British Library. |
