Note Map has many changes from 1839 edition. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston.

Note Many changes from the 1834 (1st) edition (see our copy). From the title it appears that Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. had, by 1839, taken over the selling of Mitchell's pocket maps and guides (see our other copies for 1839). At this time Mitchell was issuing his first edition of the School Geography and Atlas. The Universal Atlas was still six years away, however he may have decided to focus on school books, large maps, and important pocket maps and leave the standards to TC & Co. Map is folded into dark blue stamped leather covers 12.5x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Indiana" in gilt. Full color. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich.

Note The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Bound in dark green leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt. The two insets in the first map are titled "Gold Region Of California" and "District Of Columbia". Both maps in outline color. Prime meridians are in Washington D.C. and Greenwich.
