Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. |

1st edition 1836, copyright 1836, this is likely the third edition. Scarce, not in Phillips. This map is not listed in any collections, it an early and important map of Arkansas, first published the year (1836) that Arkansas became a state. James Callan compiled the map but little else is known about him. The map shows Land Districts and offices, Military Bounty Lands and Military Townships "unfit for cultivation," Steam Boat Routes, and much other political and physical detail. In the southwest corner of the state the boundary line is west of the final boundary and a line even further west is listed as "Proposed Boundary of Arkansas." See Heaston Catalogue 11 #16 for a copy of the 1837 edition described as "one of the few early Arkansas pocket maps." From the title it appears that Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. had, by 1839, taken over the selling of Mitchell's pocket maps and guides (see our other copies for 1839). At this time Mitchell was issuing his first edition of the School Geography and Atlas. The Universal Atlas was still six years away, however he may have decided to focus on school books, large maps, and important pocket maps and leave the standards to TC & Co. This is a scarce combination of the map portion only (without the separate sheet of city maps) of Mitchell's National Map and a reworking of the text portion of Mitchell's Traveller's Guide giving the routes of travel in 52 pages plus an 8 page catalogue of Mitchell's products. Unlike all other map issues we have seen, this map title does not include "Together with Maps of the Vicinities Of Thirty-Two of the Principal Cities and Towns in the Union" and thus is a unique issue of the map. Full color. The book is bound into dark green stamped covers with "Mitchell's National Map And Route Map" in gilt, and is closed with a brass clasp. On the National Map, the four insets are titled "Map Of The North-Eastern Boundary Of The United States", "Map Of the Southern Part Of Florida", "Map Of The State Of Texas", and "Map Of Oregon Territory." |
