Note
1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt.

Map has many changes from 1839 edition. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. U.S. Map by Drake/Hazard shows many new railroads compared to the 1856 edition. The Mitchell/Young U.S. map adds Dakota, Arizona, and many new railroad routes. This was the last year of Desilver publishing Mitchell's guide (although Buck claims to have seen an 1864 (?) issue). Enlarged catalogue of Desilver publications (which mention no map or atlas publications, indicating that Desilver was phasing out the map business, just as Mitchell's son was starting the New General Atlas edition). Bound into blue cloth covers with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt (which is changed from the 1856 edition). Outline color in both maps.

From the title it appears that Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. had, by 1839, taken over the selling of Mitchell's pocket maps and guides (see our other copies for 1839). At this time Mitchell was issuing his first edition of the School Geography and Atlas. The Universal Atlas was still six years away, however he may have decided to focus on school books, large maps, and important pocket maps and leave the standards to TC & Co. The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Bound in dark green leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt. The two insets in the first map are titled "Gold Region Of California" and "District Of Columbia". Both maps in outline color. Prime meridians are in Washington D.C. and Greenwich.
